⚾️ Work hard, play harder!

Tonight the Southeast Almaguin Fire Department got together for a friendly game of baseball and a BBQ. There were many laughs and hard hits. These players are a force to be reckoned with. If you ever need a ringer be sure to call one of these firefighters. They may catch the ball or they may not… they might hit the ball, they might not. One thing is for certain, they work hard on a fire scene to get the job done.

Thank you to Township of Armour for allowing us to use the town diamond. Fun night had by all!

🧑🏼‍🚒💧 Pumping and Drafting… Live from Kearney Lions Park!

This week, firefighters focused on rural water supply operations, practicing the movement of large volumes of water to support firefighting efforts in areas without a municipal water system.

Crews trained on drafting water from a dry hydrant, simulating a water source for an emergency. Water was then relayed to an apparatus and dumped into the portable tank, where it was pumped through a master stream to replicate high-volume fire suppression operations.

Firefighters also practiced tanker shuttle operations, efficiently filling, transporting, and dumping water while maintaining a continuous water supply. These evolutions require strong communication, coordination, and teamwork to ensure water is delivered where it is needed most during an emergency.

🧑🏼‍🚒🚒 Training like this is essential in our rural communities, helping ensure firefighters are prepared to provide a reliable and uninterrupted water supply during large-scale operations. Timing is key, in keeping our communities safe!

🟠 FIRE RATING - HIGH

The Town of Kearney, Ontario fire rating has been set to HIGH, as of today June 2, 2026.

Please take these precautions seriously:
- NO Daytime Burning Allowed (Only between 6pm - 10am) *3 day permits are not issued during HIGH ratings.
- No “recreational” Campfires. Burning is for necessary survival cooking and warmth ONLY.
- Have a method of extinguishment and a shovel near by.
- Fireworks are prohibited in the Town of Kearney: By-law 2018/24
- BBQ/Gas Stove is OK ✅

❗️Fire permits are void and not issued during HIGH rating. Failure to comply and respect the by-law will result in penalties.

❗️Extreme caution shall be taken with all open flames. Campfires for survival cooking and warmth ONLY are allowed, in a rock or metal rim pit no larger than 2ft in diameter. The forest fuels are dry, and the risk of fire is serious. New fires can start easily, spread quickly, and challenge firefighting efforts.

Stay safe and use extreme caution. If you see an unattended camp fire or wild land fire dial ☎️ 911.

For more information and by-law inquiries, contact the Fire Station and speak to Fire Chief, Paul Schaefer.

⛈️⚡️As many of you have noticed, our ‘Biggest Little Town’ has experienced quite a few storms recently which has caused a lot of power outages for an extended period of time!

Preparing for extended power outages is vital for safeguarding your health, food supply, and property. Being ready ensures you can safely weather severe weather, grid failures, or emergencies without panic or unnecessary risk.

Key reasons to prepare include:

1. Health and Safety
• Temperature Control: Protects against extreme heat or freezing cold. Extended outages during severe winter storms can lead to burst pipes and hypothermia, while summer blackouts pose severe heatstroke risks.
• Medical Needs: Ensures uninterrupted operation of life-saving medical devices, home oxygen concentrators, or refrigerated medications like insulin.
• Safe Lighting: Eliminates the fire hazards associated with improper candle use.

2. Food and Water Security
• Perishable Preservation: Keeps refrigerated and frozen food safe. A closed refrigerator keeps food safe for about 4 hours; a full freezer maintains temperature for about 48 hours.
• Hydration: Ensures access to clean drinking water, as many municipal water systems or electric well pumps fail during blackouts.

3. Communication and Navigation
• Emergency Alerts: Maintains charged communication devices so you can receive severe weather warnings, evacuation notices, or call for help.
• Connectivity: Prevents isolation by keeping phones, radios, and internet backups active.

4. Financial and Property Protection
• Financial Access: Allows you to conduct transactions, as cash registers and ATMs often require electricity.
• Property Security: Keeps electronic security systems, exterior lighting, and sump pumps operational (preventing costly basement flooding).

5. Self-Sufficiency
• Avoiding Scarcity: Reduces the stress of having to locate open stores or competing for emergency supplies (like bottled water, batteries, and fuel) in the immediate aftermath of an emergency.

Don’t get caught in an emergency.
Be prepared and be safe!

🔥🧑🏼‍🚒 Weekend Live Fire Training!

Although this weekend has been jam-packed with emergency calls, our members still found time to train and sharpen the skills needed to serve our communities safely and effectively.

Throughout the day, firefighters rotated through a variety of hands-on scenarios, including:

• Victim search and rescue operations in low-visibility conditions
• VEIS (Vent, Enter, Isolate, Search) drills
• Rapid Intervention Team (RIT) downed firefighter rescue scenarios
• Fire attack and suppression tactics
• Ventilation techniques to improve interior conditions
• Hose advancement, nozzle management, and water application
• Proper use of firefighting tools and equipment
• Fireground communication, accountability, and crew coordination

Live fire training is one of the most valuable training opportunities available to firefighters, allowing members to experience realistic heat, smoke, and fire behaviour while practicing critical skills in a controlled environment. Training like this helps improve decision-making, teamwork, and operational readiness when seconds matter most.

⚠️ As you enjoy the rest of the weekend, please stay safe, make smart decisions, and have a plan for emergencies. If you require emergency assistance, always dial 911.

⚡ Residential Generator Safety ⚡

With storm season and power outages occurring throughout the year, many residents rely on portable generators to keep essential appliances running. While generators can be a valuable tool, they must be used safely to prevent fires, carbon monoxide poisoning, and injuries.

🚨 Generator Safety Tips:
• Always operate generators outdoors in a well-ventilated area.
• Never use a generator inside a home, garage, shed, crawl space, or other enclosed structure.
• Position the generator so exhaust fumes are directed away from buildings, doors, windows, and air intakes.
• Keep the generator clear of combustible materials such as dry grass, leaves, wood piles, and other debris.
• Turn the generator OFF and allow it to cool before refueling.
• Store fuel in approved containers and away from ignition sources.
• Keep vegetation trimmed back around permanently installed generators to maintain proper airflow and reduce fire hazards.
• Follow the manufacturer’s maintenance schedule and have your generator serviced regularly to ensure safe and reliable operation.

A few simple precautions can help keep your family, property, and community safe during power outages.

Stay safe and be prepared! 🔌🏠

🌲 ATV Safety starts with YOU!

Kearney Fire & Emergency Services would like to remind everyone to ride safely, especially when travelling on remote or unfamiliar trails.

Before heading out:
• Always wear a properly fitted helmet and protective gear
• Let someone know your planned route and expected return time
• Carry a charged cell phone or communication device
• Bring water, snacks, basic tools, and an emergency kit
• Ride within your limits and slow down on unfamiliar terrain
• Check trail and weather conditions before leaving
• Look BOTH ways at trail/road crossings!

❗️NEVER operate an ATV under the influence of drugs or alcohol. Arrive alive, Drive Sober!

Remote trail incidents can quickly become serious due to difficult terrain and delayed emergency access. A little preparation can make a big difference in keeping everyone safe.

Enjoy the trails, ride responsibly, and help keep this ATV season safe for all!
