Long before people came to Tulameen for weekends at the lake, this valley was an important travel route.

In the mid-1800s, Hudson's Bay Company brigades travelled through the area, using what became known as the Hudson's Bay Brigade Trail to move people, horses, and supplies between the coast and the Interior. Years later, the railway arrived, followed by prospectors during the gold rush.

Today, it's a quiet community on the shores of Otter Lake, but its history goes back much further than most people realize.

The Similkameen isn't just w**e country.

It's farming country first.

Generations of families have been growing fruit here, and over time, vineyards became part of that story too.

Today, there are more than 14 w**eries throughout the valley, each with its own approach and personality. Spend a day exploring them and you'll quickly realize you're not just visiting w**eries, you're getting a glimpse into a community that's been built around agriculture for a very long time.

That's part of what makes the Similkameen feel different.

Manning Park has been welcoming travellers on Highway 3 for generations.

For some, it's where camping trips begin. For others, it's the place they learned to paddle a canoe, spotted their first marmot, or stopped for lunch before continuing east through the Similkameen.

Every visit is a little different, but one thing stays the same.

No matter how many times you come back, there's always another trail to walk, another lake to explore, or another reason to stay a little longer.

When people think about Cawston, fruit stands and w**eries usually come to mind.

But tucked away on Stewart Road is another local favourite.

Randall's Craft Butcher is a family-owned shop run by a second-generation butcher, specializing in locally sourced meats, house-made smoked products, and old-fashioned craftsmanship. It's one of those places where quality comes first, and it's easy to see why so many locals make it a regular stop.

Bike rides don't always have to be about the biggest climb or the fastest time.

Sometimes it's just about getting outside.

Ride along the Similkameen River, explore the trails at China Ridge, or spend a few hours on the Kettle Valley Rail Trail near Princeton. There are plenty of ways to see the valley from the seat of a bike.
