Wine Wednesday// Crowsnest Vineyards

Some places you stop. Some places you stay.

Up on the Upper Bench near Cawston, the Heinecke family has been doing this since 1985. Second generation now, with siblings Sascha and Anna leading the way, and a vision that's all about the bounty right outside the door.

The vines in their first block are over 30 years old, some of the oldest still producing in the Similkameen.

Their un-oaked Stahltank Chardonnay has won Best Un-Oaked Chardonnay in Canada two years running. Their Riesling and Gewurztraminer are worth the detour on their own.

But the wine is only part of it. There's a restaurant sourcing from neighbouring farms, wood-fired patio pizza nights with live music in the summer, an artisan sourdough bakery (locally famous, and fairly warned), and a seven-room guesthouse if you decide the valley's got its hooks in you.

This is what the Similkameen does best: a place that keeps giving you reasons to not get back in the car.

Rugged landscapes that make you pull over.
Rustic moments that feel a little slower, a little more real.
And experiences you won't find just anywhere.
This is the kind of place you don't just visit , you feel.
Come see for yourself.

Hedley has about 300 people and a gold mine that once produced millions.

The Mascot Mine sits 1 km above town, carved into the mountain. It's closed for tours now, but you can learn the whole story at the Hedley Museum. There are still active gold claims along Hedley Creek and the Similkameen River if you want to try your luck.

Stop at the Grand Union CafΓ© for coffee, baked goods, and a look around the artisan store. Then stretch your legs and look up, the mountain has a lot to say.

Princeton is the Bronze Sculpture Capital of Canada.

More than 25 life-sized bronze statues are placed throughout town, each one telling a piece of the region's story. First Nations history, ranching, mining, and the pioneers who shaped this place.

You can do a self-guided walking tour, and the whole thing doubles as an outdoor gallery and history lesson.

Pick up a map at the Visitor Centre, download the On This Spot app or visit: https://similkameenvalley.com/princeton-bronze-sculpture-walk-tour/

Then go find a local bistro and ask someone about the cattle rustler and the train robber, who both called this area home.

Every year, this valley reminds us why we're here, and every year, a few more people discover it for the first time.

If this is the summer you finally make the drive, we'll be here. The valley is only getting better from here.

May in the Similkameen.

The orchards are in bloom. The river is flowing. The highway is almost yours.
Manning Park to Cawston. Pull over often. The views deserve it.

Wine Wednesday// Corcelettes Estate Winery

Some wineries have a view. Corcelettes has a panorama.

Up on the Upper Bench just outside Keremeos, Charlie and Jesce Baessler have been quietly building something serious. Small-lot wines made from 42 acres of estate vines, grown in the kind of stony, windswept terrain that makes grapes work for it, and the effort shows in the glass.

The wines lean Bordeaux in spirit but taste unmistakably like the Similkameen. Their Syrah just landed in BC's Top 50 wines of the year.

Pull up a spot on the patio, take in the valley stretching out below, and let the tasting do the talking.

Keremeos sits below K Mountain, along the Similkameen River, surrounded by vineyards and orchards.
Population: 1,761.

It's also the Fruit Stand Capital of Canada. And honestly, once you've driven in and seen the stands lined up along the highway, you'll understand why they gave it that title.

Stop at the Grist Mill & Gardens, a BC Heritage Site with a working water wheel, heritage orchard, and a cafΓ© that'll make you want to stay for hours.

This is one of those towns you pass through once and come back to every year.

Still looking for something to do this long weekend?

Manning Park is only 2.5 hours from Vancouver.

Fresh mountain air, snow still sitting on the peaks, and trails that feel like they belong to you. It's a scenic drive from Vancouver, the Fraser Valley, or the Okanagan.

Enjoy dining, hikes, lakes, and so much more.
