Wine Wednesday// Crowsnest Vineyards
Some places you stop. Some places you stay.
Up on the Upper Bench near Cawston, the Heinecke family has been doing this since 1985. Second generation now, with siblings Sascha and Anna leading the way, and a vision that's all about the bounty right outside the door.
The vines in their first block are over 30 years old, some of the oldest still producing in the Similkameen.
Their un-oaked Stahltank Chardonnay has won Best Un-Oaked Chardonnay in Canada two years running. Their Riesling and Gewurztraminer are worth the detour on their own.
But the wine is only part of it. There's a restaurant sourcing from neighbouring farms, wood-fired patio pizza nights with live music in the summer, an artisan sourdough bakery (locally famous, and fairly warned), and a seven-room guesthouse if you decide the valley's got its hooks in you.
This is what the Similkameen does best: a place that keeps giving you reasons to not get back in the car.
