We're delighted to share a blog post by Vince Ha about "Can I Rest in Your Shade?", his remarkable art piece you may have seen (or sat in) among the willows for our show Unearthed in August 2023. Vince is a PhD candidate in Screen Cultures and Curatorial Studies at Queen’s and a 2024-2025 Fulbright Fellow at the Mario Einaudi Center for International Studies at Cornell University.

What does it mean to be, and is it possible to be, a non-native entity and also a generous caretaker of the land where one finds oneself?

Yesterday appalling violence happened near the encampment at the park. Two people have died.

The response of the mayor as reported in the Whig was reprehensible. He had not a word for those who died, or the residents and workers caught up in the shocking situation and reeling in its aftermath -- all of them his constituents.

He instead said that the encampment has to be cleared and the care hub and safe injection site closed. As if it is the source of the problems. Yes, providing better housing and services is obviously needed, but closing the existing resources until (and if) that exists is a horrifying idea. It will lead to more deaths. In no way will it clean the mayor's hands.

Instead of blaming those who are living with addiction and poverty, or those who are working in extremely challenging circumstances to keep others safe, we need to support them now more than ever.

“I’m trying to imagine how my ancestors must feel after all these years,” she said. “I look forward to being able to have people from all over the world come and enjoy that place. I hope we are able to maintain the cultural significance of it, and that people are able to realize how magnificent and intelligent the ancestors who built these wonderful earthworks were.” Chief Glenna Wallace, Eastern Cherokee Tribe of Oklahoma

A golf course built on Native American ceremonial earthworks will be removed after a private country club reached a financial settlement.
