SPRING ICE IS NOT SAFE ICE

As temperature rise, ice conditions change rapidly – even id it looks solid.
Spring ice is:
• Weak and unpredictable
• Thinning from below due to moving water
• Deteriorating from sun exposure and runoff
• Unsafe for walking, snowmobiling, ATVs or pets

What You Need to Know:
• There is NO safe ice thickness in spring conditions
• Shorelines weaken first
• Flowing water, culverts, and inlets create hidden thin spots
• Dark ice equals weaker ice

If Someone Falls Through:
• Call 9-1-1 immediately
• Do NOT rush onto the ice
• Use the Reach, Throw, Don’t Go method:
o Reach with a pole, branch, ladder
o Throw a rope, flotation device, cooler lid
o Stay low and spread your weight

Protect Children and Pets:
• Keep pets leashed near water
• Supervise children at all times
• Remove backyard rink boards promptly to discourage play

Remember:
• If you are not 100% sure – stay off the ice
• No fish, shortcut, or photo is worth your life

We are pleased to announce that as of January 23, 2026, La Crete Search and Rescue Association has officially been incorporated.
We are a community-funded, non-profit organization with a mission to build and provide a locally based search and rescue capability in Northwestern Alberta.
With incorporation complete, our next step is to finalize training with the Province of Alberta. Once training is complete, we will be fully operational and ready to respond.
Currently, our team consists of approximately 20 volunteers.
If you live in or near La Crete or within Mackenzie County and are interested in joining a search and rescue team, you can contact us at [email protected] or send this page a message.
Please note: We are not yet accepting new volunteers while we complete training for our current members. We anticipate opening recruitment within the next few months and will make an announcement when that time comes.
