A place to learn

The Okanagan Valley is home to two centres of higher learning, Okanagan College and the University of British Columbia’s Okanagan campus. Accommodating more than 12,000 students and generating an economic impact upwards of $300 Million per year, the Okanagan’s post-secondary institutions are the economic engines driving growth through research, development and job-ready graduates. More than half of Lake Country’s workforce holds a trades certificate, college or university degree. A place to grow

Central Okanagan and the Okanagan Valley continue to undergo significant urban development, and currently have more than 568 hectares of development-ready, industrially zoned land available to meet the growing demands of a population expected to reach 250,000 by 2030. In the District of Lake Country, more than ten hectares of commercially zoned land have been serviced and set aside for the development of the community’s commercial and cultural core, a traditional mixed-use commercial and residential neighbourhood. The District of Lake Country is committed to helping business build, work, and invest in the area, and offers businesses tax rates lower than the provincial average. A place to prosper

Lake Country isn’t just a place to work—it’s a place to truly live. Residents enjoy hot summers and temperate winters with boundless opportunities for year-round recreation: from water sports to cycling, golfing, skiing, hiking and much more. Today is National Indigenous Peoples Day - a time to recognize and celebrate the cultures, traditions and contributions of First Nations, Inuit and Métis Peoples.

Earlier this month, utility boxes on Lodge Road were wrapped with artwork by David Wilson Sookinakin, a local Syilx artist from Okanagan Indian Band.

“Spring Salmon Harvest celebrates salmon returning to spawn in Okanagan Lake and its tributaries. The eagles feed on the abundant Spring and Kokanee Salmon. When I was young there were many Kokanee salmon on the shores of Okanagan Lake Harvest.”

National Indigenous Peoples Day takes place on the summer solstice, a time of renewal, connection and celebration for many Indigenous Peoples.

We’re grateful to have this meaningful artwork shared in our community, reflecting the deep connection between land, water, wildlife and culture in the Okanagan.

🔁 Reminder: Weekday Okanagan Rail Trail detour begins June 29

🚧 Beginning June 29, Rail Trail users will be temporarily detoured on weekdays between Lodge Rd and McCarthy Rd for approximately eight weeks while crews install a new sewer forcemain.

📅 From Monday to Friday, Rail Trail users will be directed to a signed detour via Lodge Rd and Bottom Wood Lake Rd. The trail section will be open on weekends and statutory holidays.

❓️ Why summer?
We know summer is a busy time for the Rail Trail, and we understand this detour will be frustrating for some users. This section is also heavily used during the school year by students commuting to and from school and for school-related activities. Completing the work during the summer helps reduce impacts on students, families and school-day traffic.

🙏 Starting June 29th, please plan ahead and follow posted detour signage.

🌊 Heading to the beach this summer?

Lake water is a natural, untreated environment, and water quality can change throughout the season due to factors like warmer temperatures, rainfall, wildlife and recreational activity.

The District works with Interior Health to monitor beach water quality and post swimming advisories when needed.

Learn more about local beach water quality, water safety tips and find a link to current advisories at: lakecountry.bc.ca/waterquality

☀️ Beach tips:
• Avoid swallowing lake water
• Stay out of the water for 24 hours after heavy rainfall
• Don't feed birds
• Dispose of garbage and pet waste properly

‼️Two bears have been spotted today in the Lakes neighbourhood.

Residents are reminded to help reduce attractants by securely storing garbage and keeping bins indoors until the morning of collection day.

Placing garbage carts out before collection can attract bears and other wildlife, creating safety concerns for both residents and animals.

Thank you for doing your part to help keep our community safe and reduce human-wildlife conflicts.
