We had the honour of representing Frog Lake First Nations and our organization at the Archives Society of Alberta Conference “Archival Silence” 2026.
We haven’t shared a lot about this work publicly because behind the scenes we have been working diligently to build and develop our archival policies, procedures, and frameworks through a two eyed seeing approach, weaving our traditional ways of knowing alongside western archival practices.
Over the past few years we have been learning, training, visiting archives, and advocating for the rematriation of our Nation’s history, records, photographs, videos, stories, and belongings back home to our people.
At the conference we spoke about the silences that still exist within archives and how Indigenous voices and truths are too often left out of Canada’s recorded history. We also raised awareness around the destruction of Indian Residential School records and data scheduled for next year, and the importance of protecting, preserving, and governing our own information as Indigenous peoples.
We are deeply grateful to our leadership and community for trusting and supporting us in this work. There is still so much to do, but we are hopeful for what’s ahead as we continue reclaiming and telling our story from our own perspective. ❤️
