Suzanne Perreault Educational Advocacy

Suzanne Perreault Educational Advocacy Given the privilege to serve, I will continue to advocate for current equity scans to hear what our staff and students need to be supported in our schools.

Access ~ Equity ~ Diversity ~ Inclusion

As a self-identified Autistic with a neurodivergent family, Diversity and Inclusion is central to my work and a large part of the current working of the District. All my motions on this past term directly reflect this work and will need to be observed and supported. To date we have done a good job beginning to hear staff, we would all benefit in o

ur work to observe student experiences and where our growing edges are. Advocacy toward the MoEC will need to continue to move to ensure accessibility to both curriculum and infrastructure is on the radar supporting equal access to education. Advocacy such as a communication piece to the MoEC regarding the gross delay in the Special Education Policy Manual and Guidelines that was to be published 2 years ago hold voice for our marginalized families while guides School Districts. Motions that I have put forward and the Board has passed are as follows:
• Barrier Free Spaces in Schools;
• Feminine Hygiene in Schools;
• Cultural Safety Training for onboarding Trustees;
• Safe and Inclusive Schools (seclusion/isolation rooms)
• Safe and Inclusive Schools (seclusion/isolation rooms) MOTION 15
BCSTA – passed as amended

Sharing from BC Families for Fair Autism Funding...

🚨 TIME IS RUNNING OUT

"...We are at a critical point. In the coming weeks, the provincial budget will be passed. If nothing changes, families across B.C. will start losing funding and supports that their children rely on every day.

This isn’t theoretical anymore. This is about real children losing access to therapy, communication, and the supports that help them function and succeed...

We have seen before that when families speak up loudly enough, change happens. But that only works if we keep going.

This is the moment where it matters most.

If you’ve been meaning to act, please do it today.

Happy Autism Acceptance Month! This is a time to move beyond awareness and toward meaningful inclusion, understanding, and respect for autistic people in all areas of life. At AutismBC, we celebrate the strengths, diversity, and lived experiences of the autistic community while continuing to advocate for accessible, neuroaffirming supports across British Columbia.

We are also proud to share that AutismBC was actively engaged in the rewriting of the provincial Proclamation of Autism Acceptance Month, helping to ensure the use of respectful, neuroaffirming language. We hope this small step uplifts our community and that autistic voices remain upheld in consultation.

As a primarily neurodivergent organization, we encourage our community to listen to autistic voices, challenge stigma, and take action, through learning, connection, and advocacy, to help create a more inclusive province for everyone.

Stay tuned for exciting things coming in April! Sneak peek here: https://www.autismbc.ca/hope-in-action/

🩵 All children need support. Full stop.🩵

During the upcoming April Autism Awareness Month, we’re reminded that support needs exist on a spectrum and that’s true for every child, not just autistic children.

Some children need a little support. Some need substantial support. Some need very substantial support. Varying levels of support do not mean “no or reduced support is needed.” It simply means the amount and type of support looks different for each child.

At the heart of the MCFD CYSN funding rollout model in British Columbia is the recognition that
➡️ supports needed is supports needed. ⬅️

We have a collective responsibility to meet children where they are without judgment, without gatekeeping, and without ranking whose needs “count” more, regardless.

When we provide the right supports, children can:

- Grow in their own agency
- Develop self-determination
- Thrive as the unique individuals they were created to be.

Discrimination based on the "level" of support a child requires is still discrimination against disability. Every child deserves access to the resources that will help them succeed not based on a functioning label, but based on what actually helps them flourish with thier diagnosed disability. Support needs can change over time and we can be responsive to that.

Let’s build a system that’s flexible, compassionate, and truly child-centred. If you’re a family navigating the CYSN funding process in BC, know that your child’s needs matter exactly as they are. 💜

The MCFD's CYSN funding changes, announced in February 2026, introduce a phased rollout of new programs starting April 2026. The current Autism Funding Program ends March 31, 2027, replaced by the BC Children and Youth Disability Benefit (providing $6,500 or $17,000 annually based on significant support needs, across diagnoses) and the income-tested BC Children and Youth Disability Supplement (up to $6,000/year for eligible families). This shift expands direct funding overall with a communicated $475 million in "new" investment, aims to reach more children, and includes expanded community services.

Your child's worth and their diagnosis stand on their own. No funding model defines their value or limits what they deserve. In this transition season, keep advocating firmly for the supports your family needs.

Your efforts matter now more than ever. Stay persistent. Your voice ensures they get what helps them thrive, grow in self~agency and self~determination into thier adulthood.

Your child is enough. Always.
You are the advocate they need.
