Summer Safety and Prevention Tip: Preventing Carbon Monoxide

Natural gas is an efficient, reliable energy source. When natural gas doesn’t combust (burn) completely, carbon monoxide (CO) is created.

Unlike natural gas, CO doesn’t have an odour, so it can be difficult to detect.

These symptoms could indicate the presence of CO in your home or business:

• Slight or severe headache
• Shortness of breath during moderate activity
• Flu-like symptoms, dizziness, nausea or vomiting
• Weakness, loss of muscle control
• Unconsciousness

If you suspect CO, get outside and call 1-866-222-2068 from a safe location. Do not re-enter the building until we tell you it is safe to do so.

Summer Safety and Prevention Tip: Natural Gas Doesn't Take Summer Vacation

Your furnace may not be working as hard, but natural gas hot water heaters, BBQs, and backyard fire tables all use natural gas during warmer weather. That’s why it’s important to remain vigilant about gas leaks throughout the year.

A substance called mercaptan is added to natural gas to give it a distinctive rotten egg smell and make it easy to detect.

If you smell natural gas, leave the area immediately and call
1-866-222-2068 or dial 911 from a safe location. Do not return to the site until we tell you it is safe to do so.

Summer Safety and Prevention Tip: Check out that BBQ

BBQ season is underway!

Practice safe grilling: check the fittings on the gas connection line to your BBQ. If you see loose fittings or corrosion/rust on the gas connection line, do not light your BBQ.

Contact a qualified expert to inspect your connection line, hoses and valves and make necessary repairs.

If you smell gas even if you haven’t turned it on, leave the area immediately and call us at 1-866-222-2068.

For a safe start to every grilling season, schedule an annual inspection of your BBQ’s natural gas line and connections from a certified Safety Codes Officer.

Today, on the National Day of Mourning, we pause and remember workers across Canada who have lost their lives, been injured, or become ill on the job.

At Apex Utilities, we believe in being a good neighbour by helping out when and where you can. In honour of National Volunteer Week, we're giving a shoutout to all the amazing volunteers in communities across our province - the gift of their time, energy and talents makes life better for all of us.

Apex encourages our staff to get involved in the causes that are close to their hearts by offering everyone an annual 'Volunteer Day' to spend supporting their community. Last year, our team members took part in volunteer events in and around Leduc, Athabasca, St. Paul, Barrhead, and Drumheller.

Update (Apr. 24/26): The odour calls have subsided and we can confirm that there were no natural gas leaks detected in our service area. The odour was most likely coming from stormwater treatment at the Edmonton International Airport: https://flyyeg.com/corporate/esg/environmental-sustainability/stormwater-treatment/.

We thank everyone who reached out to report their concern - when it comes to reporting suspected gas leaks, we'd always rather you be safe than sorry!

Update (Apr. 23/26): We continue to receive a higher-than-usual volume of odour calls in and around Leduc/Nisku. Our staff are responding to each call we receive, and there is still no indication of a leak at this time. Today's strong winds are likely contributing to this issue.

We thank everyone for their patience as we respond to the increase in calls. As always, if you are concerned about an odour in your area, please let us know by calling 1-866-222-2068.

Notice (Apr. 22/26): Our Leduc office is receiving a large number of odour calls in the Leduc/Nisku area. We are responding to them as quickly as possible in the order that they are received.

At present, there is no indication of a leak in the area, but we are investigating each call out of an abundance of caution. If you do notice an odour in your area, please call 1-866-222-2068.
