So I went to the Honourable Rachael Thomas' town hall this evening at the Sandman Signature, and I have a few take-aways. The first is that the Conservatives will be true to their word and not back the Liberal budget (that's fine, no one expected them to), but Mrs. Thomas also offered only criticisms and no solutions to the problems she raised with the budget, and the actions of the current Government.
I find myself continually disappointed by partisan party-politicking. She highlighted nothing about what she was working on, except for "holding the government to account" and that, according to Mrs. Thomas, was the only role of the esteemed opposition.
Rather, I would have liked to see some kind of commitment to reach across the aisle (a girl can dream, ok?) to accomplish some of the much-needed legislative work that needs to be done. I appreciated the moments of deep compassion when it came to the victims of crime, and the disappearance of local children. As a mother, I shared her profound sadness and was quite moved. But I am also cynical of her politicization of the victims of crimes and using local stories to mount attacks against legislation without offering anything of substance towards a direction of justice.
She did note that if an election were called now, it is likely that Carney would be re-elected, and the process would be a waste of time, which I agree with. But still, no offers of policy positions or work she is doing to ease the stress of her people. Indeed, with all the doom and gloom in her speech notes, rather she added to it.
I'm going to sit with my thoughts for a little while, and perhaps expand on them on my website.
Were you in attendance? What did you think?
