Northern Lakes College (NLC) is committed to innovative training and a diverse range of partnerships that include small businesses, corporations, band and settlement offices, community groups, municipalities, and government agencies in remote locations across more than one-quarter of the Province of Alberta, Canada.
Trade schools, polytechnics and community colleges are frequently tasked with providing skilled labor training to remote and aboriginal communities. One of the major challenges institutions like NLC face is providing a fully equipped training lab in multiple locations for the practical portion of the instruction. Often no facilities exist in these remote communities or the ones that do exist are not suitable as an industrial work space. Typically they do not include appropriate wiring, power supply, space, security or safety considerations.
For NLC, the Trans4mer units provide a mobile facility that is custom fitted with a power supply, equipment and safety gear suitable to almost any trade. On completion of a 6 – 8 week course in one location the lab is transported to the next community and refitted if necessary for another trade. The portable training lab is set up and ready to go in less than a day and students are not required to leave their communities or to incur lodging and travel expenses. In the remote locations that NLC serves the portable training labs are an ideal and cost effective way of providing vital training that would not otherwise be available.
