Woodland settings are becoming popular places for homes. Despite their beauty, there is a higher risk of wildfire in these areas, which is why it’s important to make sure the fire damage coverage on your home insurance is sufficient and up to date.

Since some home insurance companies can be reluctant to renew your policies if there is a wildfire threat, it's usually a good idea to change your renewal date to the fall or winter. To learn more, contact your insurance provider or check out some frequently asked questions by clicking the BCAA Insurance link below.

If your principal residence or vehicle is insured with BCAA and it's in an evacuation zone, learn about the types of coverages that are available to help you.

Effective at 12:00 noon Pacific daylight time (PDT) on Wednesday, Oct. 1, 2025, Category 1 campfires will be permitted throughout the entire Prince George Fire Centre.

Category 2 and Category 3 open fire will also be permitted in the Mackenzie, Prince George, Robson Valley and VanJam fire zones as of 12:00 noon Pacific daylight time (PDT) on Wednesday, Oct. 1, 2025.

Category 2 and Category 3 open fire remains prohibited in the Fort St. John, Dawson Creek and Fort Nelson fire zones. The following activities and equipment are also prohibited in these zones: fireworks including firecrackers, sky lanterns, burn barrels, burn cages and binary exploding targets.

As northeastern portions of the Prince George Fire Centre remain in a deep drought, we continue to monitor the condition of forest fuels and assess our current prohibitions.

Please ensure you are practicing safe open burning in areas where permitted.

Did you know: In a wildfire, homes farther from forests have a higher risk of catching fire than houses close to forests? This is because of embers, small bits of glowing hot material, that can travel several kilometers in the wind.

Most wildfire-related house fires are ignited by blowing embers that get lodged in gutters, roofs, and firewood rather than the wildfire itself. A free FireSmart assessment helps determine where high risk areas may be on your property. See our profile for more details and how to sign up.
