We had a successful Candidate's Forum last evening at the Mahone Bay Centre. Thanks to Mike Broley and the Mahone Bay Tourism and Chamber of Commerce for organizing. The turnout was pretty impressive, especially given the snowy weather.

Of course, once it was over, I thought of dozens more things I could have said. One is that we have many volunteers in Mahone Bay who make so many wonderful events happen here. There are many ways to engage with community, but it is not always easy to find those volunteer opportunities. Maybe we could have a section on the Town website that brings all those requetss for volunteers in one place; how do I contribute to the Father Christmas Festival, how can I help with the pool, where do I go to volunteer with the Food Bank, etc.

Voting begins today, by phone or computer. Be assured, your vote is confidential, there is no way to connect your vote to your name. Your name will be marked as voted when you enter your PIN, but your vote will be transmitted securely to another site where it will be counted.

Democracy can only be healthy when people step forward, so don't forget to vote.

good to get together and share perspectives

Thank you to everyone who came out this afternoon to share perspectives and ask questions of the candidates. And thank you to Betty's at the Kitch for hosting us, it was a welcoming space for conversation.

It was great to have four of the five candidates in attendance. The fifth was travelling and couldn’t make it, which happens, but it was encouraging to have such strong representation and a respectful, thoughtful exchange.

We heard a range of views, and conversations like this are important for our community.

The official Candidates Forum takes place tomorrow evening (Wednesday) at the Mahone Bay Centre, starting at 7:00 pm.
A few people mentioned they hadn’t seen the notice for tomorrow’s forum, so I’ll be sure to share those details again here and in the community groups.

Each candidate brings a different perspective, set of skills, and passion, and I hope you’ll join us tomorrow evening to listen, ask questions, and be part of the conversation about Mahone Bay’s future.

The South Shore Bulletin has a nice profile of all five candidates today. Thank you to Ed Halverson.

Our new councillors will be jumping head first into budget deliberations for the 2026-27 fiscal year. I have watched these discussions for previous years on YouTube. I appreciate that the town newsletters provide a breakdown of where and how the money comes and goes each year

I look forward to these discussions, tedious as they are. As a councillor my job will be to pay attention, ask questions, and get clarity. The challenge for any small municipality is how to make the most of the available funds. Property taxes can only be increased by so much before the town becomes unaffordable for many. Maintaining and repairing infrastructure is an ongoing project, always with an eye to mitigating the impacts of climate change. Providing fire and police services, as well as water and sewage are ongoing expenses. I have sat on boards and worked with large and small budgets. My approach is always prudent and conservative.

Municipal councils impact the quality of our lives. I hope to be a good steward of Mahone Bay.

I have been volunteering for most of my life. I have been so blessed, and sharing is the best way to make life a little better. Most of my working life has been centred around community. I would like to bring my skills and experience to Mahone Bay council.
I helped organize a Business Improvement Area in Toronto, and initiated the first two Festival on Bloor, which became an annual event, bringing together businesses and residents to celebrate.
I also was publisher/editor of a community newspaper near Algonquin Park in Ontario. It fostered dialog among readers, and encouraged and celebrated community engagement.
As Returning Officer for Elections Nova Scotia, I actively recruited and applauded citizens who step up to make elections possible. We cannot have democracy without citizen participation.
Most recently, for the past three years, I have been engaged in bringing co-operative housing to the South Shore. It is one way to keep local land in local hands, and provide stable long term non-market housing for a mixed demographic.
I would like to hear from you, your ideas and dreams.
