Our training this week was taken to the next level!

We had the absolute privilege of hosting three members from True North FOOLS, who brought incredible knowledge, experience, and energy to the night as they walked us through vertical ventilation operations.

Crews were split into hands-on stations, with one group focusing on the proper start-up and operation of the K-12 roof saw, while the rest trained on a live fire vent prop using chainsaws alongside our Training Officer and guest instructors.

This type of training pushes our members outside their comfort zones, sharpens critical skills, and builds the confidence needed for real-world scenarios. The intensity, teamwork, and willingness to learn were evident across the board.

For those who may not know, FOOLS stands for the International Fraternal Order of Leatherheads Society, representing a brotherhood of firefighters dedicated to training, tradition, and firemanship.

We can’t thank True North FOOLS (Robbie, Cody & Pat) enough for taking the time to come out, share their expertise, and invest in our department. Opportunities like this are invaluable, and we’re extremely grateful for the continued support and brotherhood within the fire service. 🤝🚒

A big thank you to our brothers from Calvin Fire Department for coming out tonight and working alongside us to stockpile sandbags as flooding is already impacting parts of our surrounding community.

Their support, teamwork, and quick response during an active situation truly make a difference. By preparing now, we’re able to better protect homes, properties, and the people who call this community home.

We’re grateful to stand side by side with such a dedicated crew. Stronger together, especially when it matters most. 💪🚒

Both crews continued their training from last week, building on their forestry skills and signing off additional competencies—bringing them one step closer to certification. 🌲🔥

Week after week, our members show up ready to put in the work. We’re incredibly proud and grateful for the dedication, effort, and positive attitudes each person brings to the table. It’s not always glamorous, and yes—some skills can feel repetitive—but that repetition is what builds muscle memory, sharpens decision-making, and prepares our crews for the realities of the fire ground.

Training like this doesn’t just build stronger firefighters—it builds trust, teamwork, and confidence in one another. Every drill, every rep, and every lesson learned helps ensure we’re ready when our community needs us most. 🚒

Over the weekend, our crew came together to reorganize and build a new storage setup for Unit #5 Rescue. This upgrade allows us to safely carry our new Rescue 42 struts while improving access to all of our equipment when seconds matter most.

We’re incredibly grateful to the members who dedicated their time and effort to making this happen. Their hard work and commitment behind the scenes help ensure we’re better prepared to serve our community when called upon.

Great job team ! 👊🏼🧑🏼‍🚒👨🏼‍🚒👩🏼‍🚒

🚒 This week, members who are in the process of becoming certified FF1 focused on critical firefighter survival skills including emergency SCBA procedures, air management, and downed firefighter communications.

Crews worked through real-world scenarios that challenged them to stay calm under pressure while managing their air supply, troubleshooting equipment issues, and practicing emergency MAYDAY calls. These skills are essential when operating in dangerous, low-visibility environments where every second — and every breath — counts.

Firefighters practiced how to recognize when they are in trouble, how to conserve air, and how to clearly communicate their location and needs if a MAYDAY situation arises. Strong communication and teamwork are key factors in ensuring everyone goes home safely.

Training like this helps prepare our members for the worst-case scenarios, so they are ready to respond effectively when it matters most.

We are proud of the continued dedication our members show in building these life-saving skills.

Continuing from last week’s training sessions, crews took their learning outdoors to build on their forestry operations skills. After covering the fundamentals, members got hands-on experience handling and deploying forestry hose lines, focusing on proper techniques, efficiency, and teamwork in a wildland setting.

Crews also had the opportunity to operate and test the Wajax pump, gaining a better understanding of pump operations, water movement, and the importance of maintaining consistent flow during forestry fire response. Training at this level helps strengthen both individual skill sets and overall crew coordination when operating in challenging environments.

This week’s training took a different approach, offering both hands-on experience and new learning opportunities for our members.

Under the direction of our Training Officer, three of our firefighters have been participating in field training with neighbouring departments as they continue working toward their certifications. As part of this experience, they travelled to both Calvin and East Ferris to take part in mock practical skills testing, allowing them to apply their knowledge in a realistic, skills-based environment.

We would like to extend our sincere thanks to the Municipality of East Ferris and the Municipality of Calvin for their continued support, and for working alongside our members and training consultant to help deliver high-quality training opportunities.

Back at the hall, the rest of the crew was introduced to a new seasonal focus. With the snow melting and wildfire season approaching, one of our lieutenants led an introduction to forestry operations. Members had the opportunity to learn about the equipment used during wildland fires in our area, along with the terminology and fundamentals that support safe and effective operations.
