During the 2025 wildfire season, multiple wildfires burned across the Island, with the South Island at Extreme wildfire risk for much of the summer. These conditions made it clear that wildfire is no longer a distant threat.

As wildfire risk and demand for education and mitigation continue to grow, future funding for the FireSmart Community Funding and Supports (FCFS) program through UBCM remains uncertain. Community voices matter, and contacting your local government helps support the continuation of this vital work.

The video below highlights the importance of FireSmart for the residents we serve. Created by local fire departments actively involved in FireSmart programs, it shows how FireSmart reduces wildfire risk, protects homes, and strengthens community resilience.

Wildfire risk is growing on Southern Vancouver Island — and we are taking action together.

Communities and First Nations across the region have united to form the Greater Victoria Community FireSmart & Resiliency Collaborative, delivering programs and supports to strengthen wildfire resilience from the Saanich Peninsula to the Westshore as well as the Juan de Fuca electoral area and the Southern Gulf Islands.

Working together means creating safer, stronger, and more FireSmart communities for everyone. To learn more, contact your local Fire Department.

🔥 🔥 The time is now!🔥 🔥

The summer of 2024 reminded us all: the wildfire threat across Vancouver Island is real and growing. Communities everywhere are facing increased risk, and the time to act is now.

The Greater Victoria Community FireSmart and Resiliency Collaborative is uniting communities across lower Vancouver Island with a shared mission: to reduce wildfire risk and protect our homes and neighborhoods. This collaborative effort underscores the power of coming together to create resilient, FireSmart BCcommunities.

We must act before it’s too late.
