The Commission for Environmental Cooperation is a trinational organization through which the governments of Canada, Mexico and the United States collaborate, with input from civil society, on the protection, conservation, and enhancement of North America’s environment.

🚀 The CEC is looking for consultants related to a regional assessment on the uptake of the 2016 CEC Technical Guidelines on Environmentally Sound Management of Spent Lead-Acid Batteries (SLABs) in North America.

The work will center on a regional survey of recycling facilities and key actors and will result in both a technical report and a set of policy recommendations to guide future action. ♻️🔊🔋

Specifically, the consultant would be expected to:
🟢 Design a science-based survey to collect the data needed to assess the adoption of the CEC- environmentally sound management (ESM) Guidelines and current SLAB management practices in North America.
🟢 Collect, clean and analyze the resulting data to produce a technical report presenting overall findings, levels of Guideline uptake, common and novel management practices and the gaps and opportunities for ESM of SLABs.
🟢 Develop a policy report highlighting key findings and recommendations to improve the dissemination and adoption of ESM practices, tailored to all levels of government, industry, regulators and other key actors.

Remote and Indigenous communities across North America are leading innovative renewable energy transitions to reduce reliance on fossil fuels and build more resilient energy systems.

Through nine case studies, the CEC’s new report: “Transitioning Remote Communities to Renewable Energy” highlights community-led projects featuring solar technologies, wind turbines, hydroelectric systems and biomass heating.

The report explores how these initiatives are advancing:

🥚🐛 Monarch butterflies are out there… but where? 🤔 Check out the “Observations Interactive Map” and look for:
🔴 observation hot spots – areas where monarch and milkweed sightings have been abundant
🟡 observation cold spots – areas where milkweed has been observed, but monarchs have not (or only in low numbers)
🟠 observation mixed spots – areas where milkweed coverage is lower and monarch observations vary

🔎 Your mission: help fill the observation gaps by reporting what you see in places where data is limited!

📢 We are hiring! ⚖️ Director, Legal Affairs and Submissions on Enforcement Matters (SEM).

The person in this role will manage the SEM process and is responsible for ensuring the timely receipt, analysis, and administration of submissions, and for the preparation and filing to the CEC Council of any required determinations or resulting factual records.

The Director also provides legal advice in the following areas:
🔵 Issues relating to the privileges, immunities and independence of the CEC Secretariat under the Canada-U.S.-Mexico Agreement (CUSMA), the Environmental Cooperation Agreement (ECA), Canadian law, and international law.
🔵 The operations of an international organization, contracts, personnel, grants, ethics, and human resources.
🔵 Advice to the Executive Director and other Secretariat personnel on the cooperative work program of the Parties under the ECA.

Requirements:
🟢 Possess a law degree from an accredited law school and are a member of a bar of a jurisdiction within one of the Parties to the CUSMA.
🟢 Be a citizen of one of the Parties.
🟢 Fluency in English and Spanish, both spoken and written. Good knowledge of French (one of the Commission’s three official languages) is considered an asset.

👩🏽‍💻 Participation is easy! Simply record your observations through one of the participating community science data platforms listed on the Monarch Blitz website.

💡 Fun fact: a female monarch can lay between 300 and 400 eggs over the course of a few weeks, and they hatch within 3 to 8 days. 🥚🦋

🦋 Monarch butterflies are out there. But where?

This interactive map showcases volunteer observations from recent editions of the and highlights three types of locations:
🔴 observation hot spots, where monarchs (across all life stages) and milkweed observations have been abundant;
🟡 observation cold spots, where milkweed has been observed but none or only a few monarchs (across all life stages) have been reported; and
🟠 observation mixed spots, where milkweed coverage has been lower and monarch observations (across all life stages) have varied, with both high and low numbers being reported.

🤩 The 10th edition of the International Monarch Monitoring Blitz is here!

What is the Monarch Blitz? It is a call to action for individuals, organizations and community scientists across North America to join efforts to conserve monarch butterflies and the habitat they depend on. This initiative takes place every summer over 10 days.

Why is it important? The Monarch Blitz database is made up almost entirely of observations shared by volunteers. Every observation matters and helps build a clearer picture of monarch breeding habitat across North America!

The countdown is on… join us 31 July to 9 August!
