Thanks to the combined efforts of community science volunteers and our partner organizations, the 2026 International Monarch Monitoring Blitz recorded:

⚖️ The CEC receives the 10th submission of 2026. This new submission concerns the Protection of the Mexican Gray Wolf in the United States.

The Submitter asserts that United States is failing to effectively enforce the Endangered Species Act (ESA) with respect to the Mexican gray wolf (Canis lupus baileyi), a species whose range extends across northern Mexico and the southern United States. 🐺

According to the submission:
🟠 This narrower interpretation excludes from oversight and mitigation requirements the incidental deaths, injuries and habitat destruction of protected species caused by industrial, logging, agricultural, energy and road infrastructure activities in the Southwestern United States. 🪵🏗️

🟠 Its long-term survival is said to depend on ecological and genetic connectivity between the Sierra Madre Occidental in Mexico and Mexican gray wolf populations in Arizona and New Mexico.

🎉 This year marks 10 years of the International Monarch Monitoring Blitz! Thank you to every person, organization and community who participated this year and throughout the past 10 years. Together, we have helped build one of North America's most extensive community science datasets on monarch butterflies and milkweed. 🌿🌺

More than 9,000 volunteers contributed more than 19,000 observations, setting a new observation record for the Monarch Blitz! Over 91,000 milkweed plants and more than 29,000 monarchs (at all life stages) were documented!

🌺🦋🤩 We are very excited to share that thousands of people came together this summer to make the 10th anniversary of the International Monarch Monitoring Blitz a success! 🚀🎯📈

More than 9,000 volunteers contributed nearly 20,000 observations, setting a new observation record for the Monarch Blitz! Together, they documented over 91,000 milkweed plants and more than 29,000 monarchs (at all life stages)! 🌿🦋

The data collected will help scientists better understand monarch breeding habitat, identify priority areas for conservation, analyze trends in summer breeding populations and support habitat restoration on the ground.

The Monarch Blitz demonstrates that community science can be both a powerful tool for public engagement and a valuable source of data to help guide monarch conservation efforts.

🤔 Do you ever wonder about waste management in paper, cardboard, plastics and bioplastics?

Check out the series of milestone studies that aim to accelerate the adoption of (CE) practices and promote strategies for the sustainable management of 📝paper and 📦 cardboard, 🥤plastics, and 🍽️ bioplastics waste, generating economic and environmental benefits across the region.

These publications include an overview of related infrastructure, operational management and associated markets, current state of recovery and recycling practices, and existing public policies and regulations within a circular economy (CE) framework. In addition, find out best practices in waste management to inform decision-makers.

Also including a pilot study that was conducted to understand both the operational impacts and the compost quality impacts that result from use of certified-compostable poly-coated fiber food packaging.

⚖️ The CEC has received a new submission on the environmental impact of the Margarita Maza dam project in Oaxaca, Mexico.

The Submitter asserts that Mexico is failing to effectively enforce its environmental laws with respect to the assessment of the environmental impacts of the Margarita Maza dam, also known as the Mujer Solteca dam. The dam is intended to supply drinking water to the State of Oaxaca in Mexico. 🏗️💧🐟

The Submitter further alleges that:
🔵 the project was initiated without adequate permitting
🔵 the project did not consider protected species that would be affected
🔵 impacts on the ecological flow of the water body was not assessed nor the risks of building the dam in a seismic zone.
🔵 no information was provided on the change in land use (cambio de uso de suelo)
🔵 no prior consent was obtained from the affected agrarian communities.

🚀 The CEC is looking for consultants related to a regional assessment on the uptake of the 2016 CEC Technical Guidelines on Environmentally Sound Management of Spent Lead-Acid Batteries (SLABs) in North America.

The work will center on a regional survey of recycling facilities and key actors and will result in both a technical report and a set of policy recommendations to guide future action. ♻️🔊🔋

Specifically, the consultant would be expected to:
🟢 Design a science-based survey to collect the data needed to assess the adoption of the CEC- environmentally sound management (ESM) Guidelines and current SLAB management practices in North America.
🟢 Collect, clean and analyze the resulting data to produce a technical report presenting overall findings, levels of Guideline uptake, common and novel management practices and the gaps and opportunities for ESM of SLABs.
🟢 Develop a policy report highlighting key findings and recommendations to improve the dissemination and adoption of ESM practices, tailored to all levels of government, industry, regulators and other key actors.
