Burton Volunteer Fire Dept. We are a small community volunteer fire department in Burton BC.

Last night the BVFB were notified of a power line pole fire around 10pm. This was from a Facebook post that made its way back to us. The quick acting local had called 911 and BC Hydro was dispatched. Unfortunately we did not find out through 911 or our call tree and only by facebook. There were large chunks of embers falling into the duff and short canopy below. If it would not have been raining a fire would have been guaranteed. Our Brigade has had BC Hydro training and it is correct that we are not able to put water directly onto a live line but our role is to monitor and prevent spread. We were able to put the flames down and cool the pole so Hydro could safely work on the affected area once the power was off. In the event of any fire please consider after calling 911 or BC Hydro to then call us, even if it is to secure the area and simply monitor or direct people to safety.

Hello all communities from Nakusp to Edgewood. The Burton Volunteer Fire Brigade have a special favour to ask. Can you all please save our departments number into your cell phones? 250-265-4348. 250-265-9952
This can be added as BURTON FIRE BRIGADE.
Because we are not recognized by 911. Today we had a call out to a vehicle fire on the highway just north of Rock Island Rd. The individual who called the fire in called 911. It took us longer to respond. The person that called the fire in was not from Burton and therefore has us realizing that we need to request that people in the general area save our numbers into their phones so that in the event of another fire it would make our response time faster. We are only able to attend fires in our boundary which starts the south end of Burton near the Burton boat Launch and the North end just past Rock Island rd. If not certain call us anyway and we can dispatch to the appropriate departments. This is an obstacle we are always and forever trying to work around and it makes it a lot more difficult to get there quickly. Please help us to help you!

*please note that 911 in Burton is available for all other services just not fire.*

Looking forward to seeing you all tonight! BYO cups if you have them. Let’s reduce waste where possible. Thanks

It’s official, calendars are in! This wouldn’t have been possible without the amazing and professional help of Kristina of Ad. Venture Creative for helping us put it all together and Rachel Elliott for the donation of her beautiful photography of the area and all of our amazing sponsors who made this possible. Calendars are $30 each and we would love to sell all of the ones we have before our event in December so we can hopefully do a reorder! This is our first time doing this so we are fumbling through! These can be collected at the Burton transfer station and also at Hairtenders in Burton. We can also make pick up in Nakusp at Dawn Edwards Bookkeeping (in Nakusp Glass building) These make a great Christmas present and help us keeping the doors open!
Accepting cash and e-transfer at [email protected]

Hey all, sorry for the short notice, we haven’t wanted to post until we had news to share. As we haven’t had a lot of time we have been moving as fast as we could.

The Burton Volunteer Fire Department would like to thank the community for their continued support and patience during this time of transition. Our last post informed the community that we were at a time where we needed to transition from a department run under the Burton Community Association and become our own stand alone society.
Our department stepped up and we would like to let the community know that we are in the final stages of this transition. Our department is now operating under the new name “Burton Volunteer Fire Brigade.” We are happy to let everyone know we have ticked all the boxes to become our own registered society and have gotten all the required insurances to allow us to serve our community as we have over the years. We are still in the process of registering for charitable status but hope to have this done soon.
In becoming a separate society, we no longer will be financially supported through the BCA in the same way we have been over the past 15 years. There will be a request put to the community at the AGM on Wednesday to support the Fire Department through a one time donation. This request is less than our usual operating budget but we feel is imperative for successful transition as this has all happened very fast and operational funding isn’t available through grants. If you see the value in having a Fire Brigade standing ready to help protect your community, please come to the AGM on Wednesday March 26th at 7pm (Tomorrow) and show support with your vote to ensure the viability of our Brigade as we transition and operate through the upcoming wildfire season. Your support and vote is very important.

Good morning,
Please know that the BVFD is currently working on ensuring fire services are available to all community members as soon as possible. It is true that the BVFD currently does not have adequate liability insurance under the BCA to respond to any call outs at the moment. As stated in this post, it was discovered during the process of forming our own society that this insurance was never in place. Thankfully we have never needed it however we live in the age of insurance and liability and this is a must moving forward.
Our fire department attended a meeting with the RDCK and BCA where this info came to light and we have tried to look at ways to ensure this would not be the case however, until we form our own separate society we cannot get this much needed insurance. We hope to have this in place by the end of the month but this in not a definitive timeline. The BVFD is doing everything in our power to make sure this happens as quick as possible. In the meantime, please take extra precautions. Things that individuals can do at the moment to help protect their residences are: ensuring your chimneys are clean, not plugging in space heaters in to extension cords (plug directly into the wall), and not having any materials around such heaters. The fire department has Chimney bombs available to anyone free of charge in the event of a chimney fire. Please let us know if you are in need.
Let’s be thankful that this information was discovered now in the middle of winter and that we were not in this situation during the upcoming wildfire season.
Operating a fire service is expensive. Insurance, equipment maintenance etc all have substantial costs associated. As we have been directed to become our own society this leaves us in a vulnerable place with no current funding in place at the moment. We are diligently working on looking into ways to ensure that moving forward, we can afford to keep a fire service operational in this community. We constantly apply for grants and fundraise to assist in this. The RDCK and the BCA are working with the BVFD in looking at ways to assist in this regard.
In this transition period, the Fire Department has requested from the BCA a donation to ensure we can operate moving into the upcoming fire season. This will be presented on and voted by community members at the BCA AGM. It is imperative that all who see value in having the security that a group of dedicated community members are standing ready to be the initial attack for any upcoming fire really need to attend this AGM and show your support in this decision. Essentially, it is up to you!
Once again, please know that this group of volunteer community members are working urgently to rectify this situation. This takes a lot of time, commitment and money. We thank the community for your support over the years and hope to continue serving Burton and the surrounding area into the future. We will keep you all updated as we go through this process. Once we have our society created and are able to, acquiring the much needed insurance to operate will be our first priority!

Did you know the Burton Volunteer Fire Department has some smoke detectors available for locals in need? We were donated some free by the Fire Safe Program. Please reach out if you are needing to update your smoke detectors or in need of chimney bombs. Better now than too late.

Today at 7:30am BVFD was called out to a structure fire north of Burton. Despite complications due to power outage 8 members arrived on scene. Within 2 hrs the fire was completely out. Unfortunately the fire was well on its way by the time we were called out and we were unable to save the structure. This is a great reminder to please save the fire department numbers into your phone under FIRE!! 250-265-4348 and 250-265-9952. (THIS IS FOR BURTON RESIDENTS ONLY)
Remember calling 911 takes way longer for us to respond.
