Bonnie Crombie pledges to protect Lake Simcoe, local natural environment
Ontario Liberal leadership candidate visits Orillia, Barrie
BARRIE — In her latest visit to Simcoe County, Bonnie Crombie, candidate for leader of
the Ontario Liberal Party, met with over fifty local Liberals in Orillia and over one
hundred supporters in Barrie.
During her visits, Bonnie pledged, “Ontario Liberals will continue our strong legacy of
protecting our environment and urgently taking action on climate change.”
Specifically, she said, “I pledge that an Ontario Liberal government will preserve and
protect 30% of our forests, wetlands and water by 2030. This will help us find naturebased solutions to fight climate change, protect species-at-risk, and build stronger and
more resilient communities.”
“For regions close to the water like here in Simcoe County, we must take action,
including cleaning up our Great Lakes, specifically Georgian Bay, and renewing the
Lake Simcoe Protection Plan to meet calls to reduce phosphorus pollution to 44 tonnes
by 2030.”
“To help us deliver on these pledges and to ensure accountability, we’ll also restore the
Environment Commissioner and Conservation Authorities with a strengthened mandate
to defend nature, rural communities and future generations,” Bonnie said.
“For the past five years, Doug Ford has taken us backwards. His assault on the
Greenbelt, refusal to protect prime agricultural land, attacks on Conservation Authorities
and failure to even have a climate-action plan — these are disgraces. We can and must
do better,” she concluded.
This is Bonnie’s fourth visit to Simcoe County, with previous stops in Barrie and Innisfil,
Bradford West Gwillimbury, and Midland.
