We are so proud to celebrate our President, Melanie Omeniho, as she received the Governor General's Award in Commemoration of the Persons Case, one of Canada's highest honours for advancing equality for women and girls.

After the ceremony, LFMO staff and President Omeniho's family and friends gathered for a luncheon to honour her years of dedication to Métis women, girls and communities.

Thank you, President Omeniho, for your leadership and work. Here are a few highlights from this special day.

Today we celebrate the child care workers and early childhood educators who make the early years full of care, learning and belonging.

Thank you for showing up every day with patience and heart, and for helping our children grow strong and proud in who they are. A special thank you to the Métis educators who bring our language, stories and teachings into the places where children learn.

It is with great pride that we congratulate our President, Melanie Omeniho, on being named a 2026 recipient of the Governor General's Awards in Commemoration of the Persons Case.

These awards honour Canadians who have made outstanding contributions to advancing equality for women and girls. President Omeniho was recognized at a ceremony held earlier today, a day after Persons Day, a moment made all the more meaningful by Women's History Month and the 50th anniversary of Women and Gender Equality Canada.

The 1929 Persons Case marked a turning point for women in Canada, yet its promise did not reach everyone. Indigenous women were denied universal suffrage until after the Second World War. Throughout her career, President Omeniho has worked to close that gap, advocating for Métis women, girls and gender-diverse people and ensuring their voices are heard where decisions are made.

President Omeniho, thank you for your leadership and your commitment. This recognition is so well deserved.

We also extend our congratulations to fellow recipients Amanda Kilabuk, Penney Kome, Sunny Marriner, Dr. Amanda McCormick and youth recipient Yanique Brandford.

On this World Menopause Day, we honour the women who are moving through this important transition.

Menopause can bring physical and emotional changes that affect daily life, and these experiences deserve care and attention. We encourage women to speak with their health care providers about any symptoms or concerns, and to seek out the support of other women in their families and communities.

In Métis communities, women in this stage of life have often stepped into roles of guidance and leadership. Our aunties and grandmothers have shared their knowledge at kitchen tables, in gatherings, and through the teachings they pass down. When we speak openly about these experiences, we help ensure that no woman navigates this transition without guidance.

To learn more, we invite you to read our new policy brief, Menopause in Métis Women and 2SLGBTQQIA+ Kin, which outlines our calls toward culturally safe, gender-inclusive, and distinctions-based menopause care: https://metiswomen.org/resource/menopause-in-metis-women-and-2slgbtqqia-kin/

Early detection remains one of the most powerful tools in the fight against breast cancer.

As Métis women, we have long held the role of caring for our families, our kin, and our communities. Our grandmothers taught us the importance of looking after one another, and that teaching extends to caring for ourselves.

This week, we encourage you to speak with your health care provider about breast cancer screening. We also invite you to become familiar with what is normal for your body and to seek medical advice promptly if you notice any changes.

Asking questions about your health is never a burden. Your well-being matters.

The history of the Métis Nation is woven by the hands of women.

Our grandmothers carried our families through difficult times, held onto our culture when it wasn't safe to, and passed down the knowledge that makes us who we are today. Their leadership continues to guide us. This Women's History Month, we honour the matriarchs in our communities.

We'd love to hear about a Métis grandmother, mother, or auntie who inspires you, so please share her story with us in the comments.

we're sharing what Métis youth told us about mental wellness: it's about balance, culture and connection, every day, not just in times of crisis.

Taking care of your mental health is as important as taking care of your physical health. Check in with yourself, lean on your kin and community, and reach out for support when you need it.

If you're Métis and 18–29, join a virtual sharing circle on Oct 28 or Nov 10. Apply by Oct 22 at 2 pm ET.

Everyone who takes part in a sharing circle will be entered into a draw for a $200 Best Buy gift card!

After a Thanksgiving weekend spent around the table, we're reflecting on all the land has provided this year and the community that makes it all possible.

This season is about gathering, sharing, and giving thanks for the harvest and for each other.

Thank you for being part of the LFMO family. Here's to a beautiful season ahead!

What are you most grateful for this fall? Tell us below.

Today, on Sisters in Spirit Day, LFMO honours the lives of Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women, Girls, and Two-Spirit+ people. We hold their families and communities in our hearts as they continue to seek justice and healing.

Please join a vigil in your community, wear red, and stand with us in remembrance and action.

If you or someone you know needs support, check LFMO's gender-based violence resource list: https://metiswomen.org/resource/nationwide-gender-based-violence-crisis-resources/

In "The Land Remembers Us," storyteller Diane Bousquet shows how ceremony, land, and the women around her help carry the weight of grief and loss. Her story reminds us that Métis mental wellness is rooted in culture, family, and community.

LFMO wants to hear from Métis youth about what wellness means to them.

If you are Métis and between 18 and 29, join one of our virtual sharing circles. Tell us what helps you feel well, what gets in the way, and what better mental health support could look like. Your ideas will help shape LFMO's national Métis Youth Mental Wellness Policy Initiative.

Circle #1: October 28, 6-8 pm ET
Circle #2: November 10, 7-9pm ET

Apply by October 14 at 2 pm ET. Spaces are limited.
