Before 911, there was 5-4321.

In 1963, that was the fire number for the entire Powell River fire district, including Westview, Cranberry and Wildwood.

Pictured here is Duty Fireman Don Rothwell at Westview Central Fire Department headquarters, transferring an incoming fire call to the district hall concerned.

A glimpse into how the call came in more than 60 years ago in Powell River.

As Powell River’s municipal election approaches, public safety is an important issue for our community.

In 2025, the City of Powell River commissioned a Fire Protection Master Plan, providing valuable insight into the current capabilities of Powell River Fire Rescue and recommendations for staffing, emergency response, and the future needs of our community.

We encourage residents to read the report, ask questions, and make public safety part of the conversation this election. As Powell River grows, adequate fire and emergency response requires the right resources, the right staffing, and planning for the future.

Today, we honor the 343 FDNY members and one New York City fire patrolman killed on Sept. 11, 2001, the thousands of others who lost their lives in the terrorist attacks, and all those who have died since from WTC-related illnesses.

Twenty-five years later, we will .

Happy Labour Day from IAFF Local 1298.

Today we recognize the generations of workers who fought for safer workplaces, fair wages, reasonable hours, and the right to stand together.

We’re proud to be part of that history and stand alongside workers in Powell River and across Canada who continue to build, care for, protect, and serve their communities.

In solidarity, Local 1298.

Powell River firefighters demonstrate the use of fire hoses to members of the public, 1940.

Fire Chief Stan Davies can be seen at the far right.

More than 80 years later, the equipment may have changed, but connecting with the community and sharing what we do remains an important part of the fire service.

Then and now, we’re proud to serve our community.

A big thank you to the owners, management and team at RONA Powell River for taking the time to recognize our members following the fire in May.

The support shown to our crews means a lot. We’re proud to serve Powell River and grateful to be part of a community that supports its firefighters.

A little Sea Fair fun from August 1966. The crew of the Sussexvale Sailors challenged Powell River Firefighters to a game of “Beer Barrel Polo,” using a barrel for a puck and high-pressure fire hoses to send it across the opposing team’s line.

Things got competitive: “everything seemed to go,” including karate and turning off the other team’s water. Can you spot the referee, umbrella in hand, being swept right off his feet by the action?
