Orange Shirt Day (Truth and Reconciliation Day) our office will be closed to observe the day in reflection.
We want to share the steps we are taking as an organization to support Reconciliation. We are partnering with the Kingston Native Language Nest to take steps to address Call to Action 37 from the Truth and Reconciliation Commission, which urges the federal government to provide more support for Aboriginal programming in halfway houses and parole services. Our new ETA/ UTA program will hopefully increase access to section 84 releases and day parole for Indigenous people federally incarcerated.
As part of this journey, our staff Lyn (the NILO at QDC) has generously offered to lead a corn husk doll-making activity for staff. This is a meaningful opportunity to engage with Indigenous traditions and deepen our understanding of cultural practices.
We also invite everyone to attend the Kingston Truth and Reconciliation Gathering on September 30th, as we will be closed to observe the day. This event is a chance to stand in solidarity, reflect, and honour the experiences of Indigenous peoples. You can find more details about the gathering here:

We take this time to show our continued commitment to reconciliation and to embracing opportunities to learn and connect with our First Nations, Metis, and Inuit colleagues and community.
In solidarity,
The John Howard Society of Kingston and District Staff and Board
