Circle of Security Parenting, interactive parenting skills education program offered to parents within the Quesnel, BC area.

Referrals received from MCFD, Ind/families Parenting Wisely is offered to parents within the Quesnel area. Referrals are received from departments of the Ministry of Children and Family Development as well as from individuals and families. Parenting Wisely is an interactive parenting skills education program developed by Family Works Inc. The program is available in three models; young children (4

– 7), youth/teen (9 – 18) and Foster & Residential Care. The program teaches parents by providing enacted scenarios in video scenes, providing multiple solutions and critiquing both effective and ineffective parenting methods. Designed by experts with proven results for positive change Parenting Wisely is an award winning program that teaches valuable communication and behavior management skills. Parenting Wisely also offers the Children in the Middle program which focuses on education for parents and caregivers who wish to reduce the impacts of divorce or separation on their children. The Parenting Wisely Programs are designed to facilitate the learning of skills for the healthy well-balanced raising of children from age 3 to 18. They are proven to reduce problem behaviors and increase communication and family unity. Using video technology, Parenting Wisely teaches parents how to:

Discipline effectively and fairly. Explain what you expect from your child. Explain rewards and consequences of behavior to your child. Let your child know you hear him/her and you’re trying to understand. Our Parenting Wisely Facilitator leads a topic-based weekly drop in parent support group called Raising Uniquely Wired Children. Structured group learning sessions are offered throughout the year as well, drawing on parenting programs such as: Parenting From the Inside Out, The Incredible Years, The Explosive Chile, etc. Please contact our office for information on future offerings.

Parenting Programs

PROGRAM OVERVIEW

The Parent Education Support Program is available for parents looking for additional support, or for those referred by the Ministry of Children and Family Development. The following programs are available and are offered in individual or group settings;

1. Circle of Security This program was designed to offer parents/caregivers direction and clarity in understanding trauma and healing. This in an evidence-based intervention program, which is relevant to families raising children of all ages. By following a simple map, parents will learn to support their children to become competent and self-reliant individuals. Parents will be introduced to new ways to help their children connect, restore and grow.

2. Children In-Between is a skills-based program that helps children and parents deal with the children’s reactions to separation and divorce. Tension and tactics between parents often increase the stress and anxiety of children during this time. This often puts them at higher risk for behavior problems. The program brings awareness to parents, and teaches the skills needed to avoid putting children in the middle of their conflicts.

3. Collaborative & Proactive Solutions This problem solving approach is offered to support parents and caregivers of children with challenging behaviors. The model is based on the premise that these behaviors occur when the demands being placed on a child exceeds that child’s capabilities. These tools helps parents to problem solve, identify what skills are lacking and help them to solve those problems rather than trying to modify the behavior through rewards and punishment.

GOALS

The Parent Education Programs offered, are designed support parents of any aged children, by teaching tools and reinforcing skills for the healthy, well‐balanced raising of children of any age. This is achieved through self-reflection, recognizing patterns, developing more appropriate expectations and responses with children, as well as discussing the principle of repair.

These programs are proven to educate parents and caregivers, reduce problem behaviors and increase both family communication and unity.

Using video technology, handouts and workbooks, the facilitator works with parents in a group or individual settings. Certificates are available to parents after successful completion of the programs.
