🏠 Space Heater Safety Reminder

As temperatures begin to get colder in Rama, many households are turning on their space heaters to help stay warm.

If you're using a portable space heater, please keep these important fire safety tips in mind:

🔥 Keep space heaters at least 1 metre (3 feet) away from anything that can burn, including furniture, curtains and bedding.

🔌 Always plug space heaters directly into a wall outlet. Never use extension cords or power bars.

✅ Place heaters on a solid, flat surface, away from busy walkways.

⚠️ Turn off and unplug your space heater before leaving the room or going to bed.

👨‍👩‍👧 Keep children and pets a safe distance away from operating heaters.

A few simple precautions can help prevent a fire and keep your home and family safe as the colder weather arrives.

🚒 Welcoming Future First Responders! 🚒

Earlier this week, Rama Fire & Rescue was pleased to welcome students from Patrick Fogarty’s First Responder Class to the Rama fire hall!

Students had the opportunity to experience some of the physical demands and practical skills involved in firefighting through hands-on activities, including:

🔥 Self-Contained Breathing Apparatus (SCBA) drills
💪 Firefighter physical training circuit
🚒 Fire station and apparatus tours

It was great to see the students getting involved, asking questions, and experiencing some of what it takes to be a firefighter!

A big thank you to the students and instructors for visiting us. We hope this experience provided valuable insight into the fire service and inspired some future first responders!

Fire Prevention Week Open House & BBQ Postponed

Out of respect for the families and loved ones grieving recent passings in our community, Rama Fire & Rescue Service is postponing our Fire Prevention Week Open House & BBQ.

We extend our heartfelt condolences to everyone mourning the loss of a loved one. Our thoughts are with you and your families during this difficult time.

A new date will be shared once it has been confirmed. Thank you for your understanding and for continuing to care for one another.

🔋 Lithium Ion Battery Fire Safety 🔋

This video shows how quickly a lithium ion battery failure can turn into a serious fire. Smoke and flames can spread rapidly, leaving very little time to escape.

As part of Fire Prevention Week, Rama Fire is encouraging community members to take a closer look at how battery-powered devices are used, charged and stored at home.

Help reduce the risk with these important precautions:

🔌 Use the correct charger. Use the charger supplied with your device and follow the manufacturer’s charging instructions.

🛏️ Choose a safe charging location. Keep charging devices off beds and couches, away from materials that can burn, and clear of doorways and escape routes.

🔍 Check for damage. Do not use batteries that are swollen, dented or showing other signs of damage. Never modify or tamper with a battery.

🚨 If a battery starts smoking, hissing or popping, leave immediately and call 9-1-1 from a safe location. Do not wait for visible flames before getting out.

🚒 You’re invited to our Fire Prevention Week Open House & BBQ! 🍔

Join Rama Fire & Rescue Service for interactive displays, practical fire safety tips, and a free BBQ with your community!

🕚 11:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m.
📍 Rama Fire Hall

We’re highlighting Lithium Ion Battery Fire Safety, including safe charging practices for everyday devices. We’re also focusing on an important local issue: the improper disposal of smoking materials, especially cigarette butts in planter pots.

Start with the activities, then join us for lunch! Pick up a short fire safety activity sheet when you arrive and explore our displays to find the answers. Return your completed sheet to our crew in exchange for a BBQ meal ticket, then enjoy lunch with us! Our crew will be happy to help and answer questions along the way.

🚒 Fire Prevention Week is underway! 🚒

Rama Fire is supporting this year’s focus on Lithium Ion Battery Fire Safety, helping community members learn about safe charging practices and reducing the risk of fires involving the batteries we use every day.

We are also highlighting an important local issue: the safe disposal of smoking materials. This includes bringing attention to cigarette butts being discarded in planter pots and other unsafe locations. Throughout the week, we will be sharing information about these hazards and safer disposal practices.

🍔 We will be hosting our Open House & BBQ at Rama Fire Hall! Come meet your firefighters, explore our fire safety displays, ask questions and enjoy some food. 🍔

We will also be attending the Rama Health Fair, where community members can stop by our booth to chat with us and learn more about fire safety at home.

🚨 Test Your Smoke Alarm Day 🚨

Today, September 28, is Test Your Smoke Alarm Day! Rama Fire & Rescue Service is encouraging all community members to take a few minutes today to test every smoke alarm in their home.

Working smoke alarms provide early warning when a fire occurs and can give you and your family valuable time to get outside safely. Press and hold the test button on each alarm until it sounds, and make sure everyone in your household knows what the alarm sounds like and what to do when they hear it.

Remember to have working smoke alarms on every storey of your home and outside all sleeping areas. If an alarm does not sound when tested, is damaged, or has reached the end of its service life, it should be replaced.

🚒 Rama Fire crews are also currently making their way through the community as part of our Annual Smoke Alarm Program. Firefighters will be visiting homes to check smoke alarms, help identify alarms that may need attention or replacement, and make sure community members have the protection they need.

If you see our crews in your area, give them a wave and take a few minutes to complete your smoke alarm check with them.

A few minutes today could make an important difference in an emergency. Test your smoke alarms today and make sure your home is protected.

🚒 Firefighters’ National Memorial Day 🚒

Today, September 13, we honour and remember the firefighters across Canada who have made the ultimate sacrifice in the line of duty.

Their courage, dedication, and commitment to protecting others will never be forgotten. Rama Fire & Rescue Service joins fire services and communities across the country in remembering those who gave their lives in service to others.

We also recognize the families, friends, and fellow firefighters who continue to carry their memory forward.

Today, we honour their service and remember their sacrifice.

Today, September 11, we recognize National Day of Service, a day to reflect on the compassion, courage and unity shown by Canadians in times of tragedy.

It is also an opportunity to recognize the first responders, emergency personnel, volunteers and community members who continue to step forward when others need help.

Rama Fire & Rescue Service encourages everyone to take a moment today to remember those affected by the events of September 11, 2001, and to recognize the spirit of service that continues to strengthen our communities.
