New Brunswick communities currently have access to funding for both wildfire resiliency planning and implementation projects, and Emergency Solutions International ESI is actively supporting municipalities with application preparation ahead of the June 1 deadline.

ESI has direct experience supporting wildfire resiliency initiatives in New Brunswick and across Canada. As lifelong New Brunswickers with extensive backgrounds in emergency management, hazard mitigation, and municipal support, we understand both the provincial landscape and the operational realities communities face.

Phase 1 funding supports the development of community wildfire resiliency plans, including wildfire risk assessments, vulnerability analysis, and strategic mitigation planning.

Phase 2 funding supports implementation initiatives that move communities from planning into action through mitigation and resiliency projects.

A proper community wildfire resiliency plan is more than a report. It becomes the foundation for informed decision making, prioritization, funding alignment, and long term community protection. Strong plans combine established FireSmart principles with local data, operational realities, and the expertise of community stakeholders.

At ESI, we work directly with municipalities and local experts to develop practical, defensible, and actionable strategies tailored to New Brunswick conditions. Our team has supported municipalities, provincial and federal governments, and major industry partners across Canada, bringing nationally informed expertise with a strong understanding of local realities.

Communities that benefit most from wildfire resiliency funding are rarely the ones reacting at the last minute. They are the ones prepared to move forward with a clear strategy and experienced support.

Funding is available now for both planning and implementation, and Emergency Solutions International ESI is prepared to help municipalities strengthen their applications, develop resiliency plans, and move projects forward before the June 1 deadline.

New Brunswick communities have an opportunity to strengthen their wildfire preparedness through the provincial Community Wildfire Resiliency Program.

Applications are now open to support the development of Community Wildfire Resiliency Plans, with a submission deadline of June 1, 2026.

These plans establish a structured approach to wildfire resilience, bringing together:

- Local wildfire risk assessment
- Practical mitigation strategies
- Emergency response considerations
- Community engagement and awareness

The application process requires clear scope definition, alignment with program expectations, and a strong understanding of local wildfire risk. Communities that begin early are better positioned to submit complete, competitive applications and move forward efficiently once approved.

At Emergency Solutions International (ESI), we are prepared to support municipalities throughout the application process. Our team has already delivered Community Wildfire Resiliency Plans in New Brunswick and understands both the technical requirements and the municipal realities behind successful submissions.

Our focus is straightforward:

- Supporting clear, well-structured applications
- Ensuring alignment with program requirements
- Positioning communities to move quickly from approval to implementation

For municipalities considering this opportunity, a proactive approach matters. Early coordination, defined priorities, and a clear path forward will strengthen both the application and the outcomes that follow.

We also recognize and appreciate the leadership of the Province of New Brunswick in investing in community resilience and supporting municipalities in taking practical steps to reduce wildfire risk.

Wildfire Planning Must Be Defensible

For municipalities, wildfire planning is not just a technical exercise. It is a governance responsibility.

Councils, CAOs, and senior leadership are being asked to approve investments, pursue funding, and make land use and infrastructure decisions that must stand up to public scrutiny. That means wildfire risk assessments and resiliency plans need to be defensible, not just well intentioned.

Defensible plans share a few critical characteristics:

- They are built on recognized standards. Using frameworks such as CSA Z1600, wildfire risk is assessed systematically, decisions are traceable, and recommendations are grounded in established risk management principles.

- They clearly document methodology and assumptions. When priorities are questioned, the rationale is easy to explain. Leadership can point to evidence rather than opinion.

- They connect risk to municipal decision making. Wildfire considerations are tied directly to infrastructure planning, emergency management, operations, and capital priorities rather than sitting in isolation.

- They support transparency. When residents and partners ask why certain areas or projects were prioritized, the answers are clear, consistent, and credible.

At Emergency Solutions International (ESI), our approach to wildfire risk assessment and Community Wildfire Resiliency Planning is intentionally structured to support defensible decisions. Our work helps municipalities demonstrate due diligence while building plans that are practical, fundable, and ready to implement.

Preparation is not about predicting the next fire. It is about ensuring that when decisions are reviewed months or years later, they still make sense.

Across New Brunswick, municipalities are being asked to make real, defensible decisions about wildfire risk, often with limited internal capacity and evolving expectations.

Community Wildfire Resiliency Plans are an important starting point. The real work begins when communities move from planning to action, prioritizing initiatives, coordinating partners, and making sure risk‑reduction efforts are practical, measurable, and sustainable.

At Emergency Solutions International, we bring national‑level emergency management and risk mitigation experience together with deep local knowledge of New Brunswick’s communities, forests, and municipal environments. Our focus is on stewardship, supporting municipalities whether they are creating a new plan or working to implement one they already have.

The Role of a Community Wildfire Resiliency Plan

A proper community wildfire resiliency plan is the foundation of effective risk reduction. It guides informed decisions, ensuring efforts are focused where they will have the greatest impact.

Strong plans are not built on generic assumptions. They combine established FireSmart principles with local data, real conditions, and community knowledge.

This means connecting local subject matter experts, municipal leaders, and operational personnel with experienced consultants who understand the realities of New Brunswick’s forests, communities, and governance.

When done well, a resiliency plan does more than identify risk. It translates that risk into clear, prioritized actions that are practical, defensible, and aligned with available resources.

At Emergency Solutions International, we have supported provincial and federal governments, municipalities, and major industry partners across Canada. As lifelong New Brunswickers, we bring both national expertise and deep regional understanding to every engagement.

Our work is designed to ensure wildfire planning reflects both proven methodology and local reality, while positioning communities to act when funding opportunities arise.

Because protecting communities starts with informed decisions grounded in the right expertise.

What Effective Wildfire Planning Actually Looks Like

- A proper wildfire plan drives decisions.
- It prioritizes what matters most.
- It creates a clear path from risk to action.

It also positions a municipality to act when funding becomes available.

You can recognize a strong wildfire plan immediately, not by the size of the report, but by what it enables a municipality to do next.

Strong wildfire planning produces three clear outcomes.

Decisions become obvious. Council and senior leadership can quickly see where investment is required and where it is not. There is no ambiguity and no competing priorities.
Actions are sequenced, not just listed. The plan identifies what needs to happen first, next, and later based on risk, cost, and operational impact.
Funding pathways are built in. Recommended mitigation measures are aligned with provincial and federal programs so when funding opens, projects are ready to move.

In practice, critical infrastructure is clearly identified and prioritized. Wildland Urban Interface vulnerabilities are tied to specific mitigation actions. FireSmart aligned strategies are matched with timelines, ownership, and funding eligibility. Wildfire considerations are integrated into emergency planning and municipal operations.

This is the difference between a document and a decision making tool.

At Emergency Solutions International (ESI), we design wildfire plans with implementation in mind so communities are not starting from scratch when opportunities arise.

Because in our experience, the municipalities that benefit most from funding are not the ones that react fastest. They are the ones that were already prepared.

As we come in for a landing on International Women’s Day, we're taking a moment to recognize the incredible women who keep our organizations in the air.

Across boardrooms, emergency operations centres, training environments, and on the front lines of incidents across North America, women are leading with the experience, professionalism, and calm expertise that complex situations demand.

At ESI, we are proud to work alongside outstanding female leaders who help guide strategy, deliver programs, support clients, and strengthen the emergency management profession every day.

In aviation, a safe landing depends on preparation, judgment, and a steady hand on the controls. The same is true in emergency management and in the corporate world. Whether navigating a complex incident, guiding a team through uncertainty, or steering an organization through strategic decisions, strong leadership relies on experience, clear thinking, and the confidence to make the right call when it matters most.

Today, we recognize the women across our industry who bring that level of leadership to every mission — helping organizations navigate risk, respond to crises, and emerge stronger on the other side to keep us .

Thank you for the leadership you provide and the example you set.
