I despise having to do a post on this again this year but here goes. People we need to be better than this.

SNAP TRAPS
Currently we have 4 infant skunks in care, they're not from the same litter but what they do have in common is all are victims of the negligent use of rat snap traps.

The force exerted by a rat trap when it snaps shut can vary based on the design and size of the trap. However, most traditional snap traps can exert a force comparable to a medium to large dog bite being delivered at lightening speed. (think bull dog or shepherd breeds).Trap speeds have been recorded at speeds of 3 milliseconds from the trigger being activated.

Three of the injured infants will require specialized veterinary intervention to fully see the extent of the damage and are being taken to a specialist this coming week. The fourth, chewed off her front leg to release herself from the trap and the pain it caused.

It saddens me deeply to see the use of rat snap traps, tools of pain and suffering for innocent creatures. These traps inflict unimaginable fear and suffering and have not been proven to control rodent populations. Compassion should guide our actions, not cruelty.

EXTREME MAKEOVER: OPOSSUM EDITION (or: um you got something on your face)

Baby opossums (joeys)are born very underdeveloped and have to climb into their mother's pouch under their own steam. Each baby will attach itself to one of the mother's ni***es, the ni**le swells, effectively sealing the baby's mouth keeping the joey attached. Due to this unique birth, baby opossums don't have the typical sucking reflex other mammals have.

In care, the first step of teaching joeys to lap is not a pretty process. (See reference photos LOL). They are extremely clean animals and will lick the warmed formula off of their littermates which helps kicks in the lapping response.

Until that time they do get a little help getting cleaned up after each meal. It may not be glamorous but who cares what you look like when you just want a full belly.

Hello members of the itty bitty critter litter 🙂. Just a PSA to let you know it's the start of baby skunk season. So please be observant when letting your dogs out for their evening uh "business". These babies are tiny and hard to see at night but your dog sure will be able to see them. AND contrary to popular belief they do have the ability to not spray so much as sq**rt their special blend of perfume as soon as they are born. So a little diligence will save us all.

Now feel free to behold the adorable-ness of this wee fart kitten.

Whenever you struggle to give your little ones a bath just remember it could be worse. This poor guy was brought into care after being found in a very kind gentle man's kitchen sink. The bat had ended up in a dish used to make garlic rosemary potatoes.

His fur was coated and he needed a quick bath to cut the oils. Though not pleased he did smell heavenly. All clean now and with a yummy after bath snack he is tucked into a warmed enclosure to dry off and fix his hair.
