📰This Week’s Just Ask article in the Coast Reporter: Is This Message a Scam?

Scam messages are becoming increasingly convincing. 📱 From fake bank alerts to messages that appear to come from someone you know, how can you tell what’s real?

🚩 Watch for:
📩 Messages that pressure you to act quickly
🎁 Requests for gift cards or unusual payments
🔗 Suspicious links and requests for personal information
🤫 Anyone asking you to keep a situation secret

💡 Your best defence? Pause before you click, send money or share information. Verify messages independently and ask someone you trust if you’re unsure.

Remember, anyone can be targeted by a scam, and there’s no shame in asking for help.

📰 Last Week’s Just Ask Column in the Coast Reporter: What Is an RDSP? Could You Qualify?

A Registered Disability Savings Plan (RDSP) can help people with disabilities build long-term financial security — and the government may contribute thousands of dollars through grants and bonds.

💰 Depending on your circumstances, the government may add:
• Up to $3,500 a year in grants when you contribute
• Up to $1,000 a year in bonds, even if you don’t contribute
• Up to $70,000 in lifetime grants and $20,000 in lifetime bonds

To open an RDSP, you must first be approved for the Disability Tax Credit (DTC).

💡 Already approved for the DTC? It may be worth checking whether an RDSP could benefit you or a family member.

📰 This Week’s Just Ask Column in the Coast Reporter: Could You Qualify for Free Home Energy Upgrades?

Is your home drafty, difficult to heat, or costing more to keep comfortable? You may be eligible for free home energy upgrades through the Energy Conservation Assistance Program (ECAP).

🏠 Eligible households may receive:
• A free home energy evaluation
• Personalized energy-saving advice
• Insulation and draft-proofing
• Ventilation improvements
• Heat pumps and other energy-efficiency upgrades

ECAP is income-based, and recent funding changes mean more households may now qualify. Renters may also be eligible if the utility account is in their name and their landlord provides consent.

💡 Even if you checked your eligibility in the past, it may be worth checking again.

💙 Thank you, Martin!

This Thursday is Martin’s last day of his practicum with us. When he started, the Resource Centre wasn’t exactly what he had in mind. He’d hoped to be working in areas like substance use and mental health — but as he settled in, his perspective definitely changed!

“I was absolutely floored by the amount of services the Resource Centre offered… Every day I got to interact with wonderful people and had the privilege to make a difference in their lives.”

We’re glad you ended up here, Martin! Thank you for showing up for our community and for the impact you made. All the best in your next chapter! ✨️

💜 International Overdose Awareness Day | August 31

Today, we come together as a community to remember the people we’ve lost to toxic drug poisoning, support those who are grieving, and stand alongside the people and families affected.

These are more than statistics. They represent our neighbours, friends, family members, coworkers, and community members. Today is an opportunity to remember their lives, listen, learn, and come together with compassion.

We’re proud to be part of this community gathering and invite you to join us for an afternoon of remembrance, reflection, and connection.
