After a lot of thought, and more than a few conversations around our kitchen table, I’ve decided that I won’t be seeking another term as Mayor of Slocan this October.
It wasn’t an easy decision. By the end of this term, I will have spent 18 years serving on Slocan Council, the last 12 as Mayor. That’s a pretty big chapter of my life.
And I have genuinely loved it!!!
I love this community - our character, our people, and the way folks show up when it matters. It has been an incredible privilege to serve a place that means so much to me.
When I first put my name forward, Slocan was at a turning point. Things that had long defined this community were changing, and we had a choice about how we wanted to meet the moment.
I believed deeply in what is possible here….that Slocan could honour its past without being bound by it. That we could remain open to new people, new ideas, and many ways of building a life - a place with room for all of us.
I knew that what makes this place special could endure as our community evolved…..That we could be a small, rural mountain village AND be open, creative, and forward-looking - AND still be wild at heart.
Over these past years, I’ve had the privilege of seeing so much of that possibility take shape. I am incredibly proud of how far we’ve come - not because of any one person or Council, but because so many people have cared enough to contribute, volunteer, build, imagine, and keep showing up.
There is still lots to do. We have important projects underway and commitments to see through, and I remain fully committed to the work ahead for the rest of this term.
Elected office doesn’t belong to any one of us. We are entrusted with it by the community, for a time.
For me, for now, it’s time to step back.
I’m feeling pulled toward something different now…..toward new ideas and possibilities, and toward a life with a little more room for creativity, time with the people I love, and new ways of contributing.
And maybe someone else is beginning to feel the pull to step forward here?
Sometimes people just need someone to tap them on the shoulder and ask, “Have you ever thought about running?”
Consider this my tap on your shoulder.
If you’re even a little curious about what serving as Mayor or on Council is really like, I’d be happy to have a chat or a coffee.
I want to thank my family, who have supported me through so many years of late meetings, interrupted plans, difficult decisions, and all the demands that come with public life. I could not have done it without your patience, perspective, and love.
Thank you to the Councillors and staff I’ve had the privilege of serving alongside, and to everyone who has brought forward an idea, raised a concern, volunteered, helped make something happen, or simply cared enough to be part of this community.
Most of all, thank you for trusting me - for 18 years - with the extraordinary privilege of helping to care for this special place we call home.
I will always be grateful. ✨💕✨
