"Never give up, never despair - that was the message of VE Day"

Her Majesty The Queen makes a special address on the 75th anniversary of VE Day.

On 8 May 1945, King George VI made a radio broadcast to the people of the Commonwealth to mark the end of war in Europe. The Queen's address this evening was made at the same hour as her father's broadcast, exactly 75 years ago.

Our first live stream from Government House, while not without its glitches, our fault not that of the amazing performers, was still wonderful. Thank you to Brian Way for bringing his “Patio Series with Brian Way”, accompanied by his special guest NL’s own Petrina Bromley, cast member of Come From Away, to the patio of Government House for his Patio Series. Pleased to have the performance as part of the ongoing LG’s Performance Series. While chilly & windy, the music & singing were uplifting as those of us in attendance practiced physical distancing to stay safe during COVID-19. #FlattenTheCurve #nlarts

It has been two wonderful years. Having been installed as Lieutenant Governor of Newfoundland & Labrador May 3, 2018, the time has passed quickly. I am thankful for the opportunity to continue to engage with the people of Newfoundland & Labrador at Government House & throughout the province. It has, & continues to be, a privilege & an honour to serve as the Queen’s representative in NL. I look forward to when it will be safe for everyone to re-engage.

Government House is glowing blue in recognition of #HuntingtonAwarenessMonth. #LightItUp4HD was started in 2015 to raise awareness about #HuntingtonDisease which is a hereditary, neurodegenerative illness that has physical, cognitive & emotional symptoms. Caused by a mutation in the gene the disease makes the protein Huntington. To date there are no drugs to slow or stop its progression. According to Huntington Society of Canada approximately one in 1,000 Canadians live with #HD, one in 5,500 are at risk of inheriting the disease, & one in 1,000 are impacted by HD in some way. Typically males or females aged 35 to 55 are most likely to notice symptoms but there is also a childhood form of HD called juvenile HD.

Last year the flag of The Netherlands was flown on the grounds of Government House to welcome The Netherlands Ambassador to Canada, His Excellency Henk Van der Zwan, for the Kingdom of the Netherlands “Liberation 75” Tulip Planting Ceremony. The ceremony commemorated the efforts of the 175,000 Canadian soldiers who helped liberate The Netherlands during WWII, 7,600 of whom paid the ultimate sacrifice. Today is The Netherlands National Day of Remembrance & tomorrow is the 75th anniversary of the liberation by Canada & allied forces. The tulips planted last year will soon bloom on the grounds of Government House & serve as a reminder of the appreciation to Canada by The Netherlands.

Government House is glowing yellow in recognition of our amazing front line workers who have given so much, & continue to give, to ensure the safety of those they serve. There simply aren’t enough words to let them know how much they are appreciated. While lighting Government House is another way to recognize their hard work & say thank you, the best way is to do everything possible to help #FlattenTheCurve as a way to lessen their workload.

The plans by HMCS Cabot to mark the 75th anniversary of the Battle of the Atlantic in a ceremony at the National War Memorial (Newfoundland) in City of St. John's had to be cancelled because of COVID-19. The cancellation doesn’t mean the longest continuous military campaign in WWII, from 1939 to the surrender of Germany in 1946, won’t be remembered along with the service of veterans, their families & the sacrifices of those who paid with their lives which included 2,210 sailors, 1600 merchant seamen, 752 air crew & the loss of 33 vessels. #LestWeForget #WeWillRememberThem

A beautiful day on the grounds of Government House for cleaning up after the more than usual damage following a harsh winter. Many branches & twigs to be gathered on 22 aces of land. Great chatting with all who were walking on the grounds & stopped to say hello while practicing physical distancing. Special thanks to all who helped grow the piles of twigs & branches His Honour & I had picked up to help our gardener at Government House. Some walkers even started their own piles. There are still lots of twigs if you want to pitch in by starting your own or adding to the existing piles while enjoying the grounds.🙏👍🥰

May 1st is recognized as National Physicians Day, the day set aside to celebrate our physicians who go above & beyond the call of duty in caring for their patients. Evidence of their dedication & commitment has been clear during #COVID19. According to the Canadian Medical Association, May 1st was chosen in honour of Dr. Emily Stowe who was born May 1st, 1831 & became the first woman to practice medicine in Canada. Many charities are reaching out for help during COVID-19 to try & meet the increased demand for support from those they serve. At Government House Chef Jerome Smart stepped up without hesitation to support Government House COVID-19 Community Outreach Program. In keeping with the requirement that Government House be closed to the public, all employees are working from home, if possible to do so. Jerome returns to Government House twice a week & practices physical distancing to cook 200 meals weekly for the “Just Us Women’s Centre” & “Brian Martin Housing Resource Centre” to support Stella's Circle Chef Maurice Boudreau in meeting the increased demand. #WeAreInThisTogether #HopeLivesHere #TogetherApart

****Not from me, just a copy and paste of another post.**** (Copy) I call on the Lieutenant Governor of Newfoundland and Labrador to award Dr. Janice Fitzgerald, the Order of Newfoundland and Labrador. As the days, weeks, and months pass by, many of us have had the privilege to hunker down and ride out this storm with our family. While all frontline and essential workers deserve a humungous pat on the back, there's a few people who I feel have went above and beyond to help keep our province and it's people safe during this trying time. One of those people is a face we have all come to know very well in the past few months. That person is Dr. Janice Fitzgerald. Take a look at this picture below. One photo was taken at the beginning of this pandemic, and one taken just recently. Im guessing you can tell which one is which. Really look into her eyes and tell me what you see? I see a woman who is tired, worn, and exhausted. But do you know what else I see? I see a woman who has spent countless days and nights studying every fact, every possible situation, and every single number, so that she can make the tough decisions that will either make or break this province. The Order of Newfoundland and Labrador is intended to honour any current or former longtime resident of Newfoundland and Labrador who has demonstrated a high level of individual excellence and achievement in any field, having "demonstrated excellence and achievement in any field of endeavour benefiting in an outstanding manner Newfoundland and Labrador and its residents." I don't know about you, but I believe Dr. Fitzgerald deserves this honour and so much more. If that answer is no, take another look at this picture and tell me again. If you believe that Dr. Fitzgerald deserves this honour, please show your support and fill out the nomination form. I have attached the link below in the comment section.
An important message for all Newfoundland Labrador. Pls share. https://m.facebook.com/story.php?story_fbid=238847837520125&id=120339982704245
