Public Advisory: Important Notice Regarding Services During Postal Disruption

The Provincial Government continues to closely monitor the current labour situation at Canada Post. A disruption in mail delivery affecting mail delivery from Clarenville to St. John’s began on Friday, November 2, and 8:00 a.m.

If you receive benefit payments via cheque from the Provincial Government, please contact the applicable government department or agency to find out how you can continue to receive these payments without disruption.

Contact information for all departments and agencies can be found via the Government of Newfoundland and Labrador website.

Income Support clients are advised that in preparation for a postal disruption, bimonthly Income Support cheques have already been delivered to Advanced Education, Skills and Labour offices for pickup. For more information, visit www.aesl.gov.nl.ca/cp_cheque_pickup.html

Individuals in receipt of Employment and Training Programs payments via cheque can call 1-800-563-6600.

Provincial Government clients should recognize that some delays may be experienced, but staff and regional offices will work to the best of their ability to lessen the effect a service disruption may cause.

Some delays may be experienced in the event of a disruption in mail delivery. Individuals still receiving payments through regular mail are strongly encouraged to enroll for direct deposit to avoid any potential delay in payment. To sign up for direct deposit, go to: //www.aesl.gov.nl.ca/forms/direc...

The Honourable Dwight Ball, Premier of Newfoundland and Labrador, joined by the Honourable Al Hawkins, Minister of Advanced Education, Skills and Labour, today announced Suna Dau Yath of St. John’s as this year’s recipient of the Council of the Federation Literacy Award.

Born in Sudan, Ms. Dau Yath began her education learning Arabic by an oil lamp. Once she arrived in Canada, Ms. Dau Yath enrolled in English as a Second Language training and spent much of her spare time improving her English by borrowing books from the library and reading to her children. She has since completed Adult Basic Education courses and graduated from high school. Ms. Dau Yath is a respected community leader among her fellow Sudanese newcomers. She volunteers at her local community centre, children’s school, and plans to pursue post-secondary education.

Accepting the award in front of her family and numerous community supporters, Ms. Dau Yath said, “I am blessed to be in Canada, to come to Newfoundland and Labrador, and to find beautiful people who are really supportive. Without them, I would not be here today. When I came to Canada, I really wanted to learn and to know about a lot of things like how to be a successful person. I had zero English and I got the support to be here today. Thank you to my tutors, the people who nominated me for this award and my family for their support. I wouldn’t be where I am today without my community and past experiences.”
