So proud of (and incredibly inspired by) our very own Lantern Board member, Sr. Betty Rae Lee!

The Senior of the Year award recognizes a senior who is making a difference in the community through leadership, volunteering, helping others, or participating in activities.

In 2019, Sister Elizabeth Rachel Lee, known by friends and family as Betty Rae, was named our Senior of the Year at a ceremony at City Hall.

Born in St. Maryโ€™s in 1942, Betty Rae joined the Presentation Sisters Congregation in St. Johnโ€™s in 1960. Starting in the 1990โ€™s she served as President of the Atlantic Region of the Canadian Religious Conference and as President of the International Presentation Association.

In the latter position she planned and participated in gatherings promoting care for the earth and for those kept poor, which were held in New York, Australia and India. She also supported Presentation missions in Zambia and Zimbabwe and volunteered in Dominica at a vocational training centre supporting at-risk youth.

The advocacy and leadership that Betty Rae exhibited abroad is reflective of the leader she is at home. In St. Johnโ€™s she serves as the volunteer Board Chair at The Lantern and Board Co-Chair at The Gathering Place.

She was elected to the Presentation Sistersโ€™ provincial Leadership Team and serves as their Congregational Leader. As part of her duties as Congregational Leader, she oversees the Sisters that live in St. Johnโ€™s and, alongside the Leadership Team, is ensuring for their continued care. As part of this effort, she played a leading role in the transfer of St. Patrickโ€™s Convent to the City of St. Johnโ€™s.

The Lantern will be closed until further notice due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. As an organization whose main purpose is to bring people together, itโ€™s heartbreaking that the situation calls for social distancing. However, weโ€™re also eager to do what we can to help see our community through this difficult time.

It's sometimes easy to forget the ongoing humanitarian crises out there when the news cycles have moved on. Just last month over 230,000 people (more than the entire population of the St. John's metro area!) fled a single region in Syria due to escalating violence.

The scope of the tragedy seems overwhelming - however, Homes for Syrian Families is providing a practical way to support those affected by the conflict. Please consider joining this effort by attending their fundraiser on Feb 8th!

There is probably warmth to be found in pining for one of Newfoundland's short, sweet summers - but we hope you're enjoying the blessings of winter, and aren't too snowed under!

Our Story

In the mid 18th century a young Irish woman named Nano Nagle dedicated her life to serving the poor. She went on to become the foundress of the Presentation Sisters in Ireland in 1776. Many were moved by Nanoโ€™s work and joined in her mission, extending her legacy beyond the Irish shores.

On September 21, 1833, a small ship named The Ariel sailed through the Narrows of St. John's Harbour. Among the passengers were the first four Presentation Sisters to come to Newfoundland, carrying the vision and spirit of Nano Nagle with them. Over the next 150 years the Sisters carried on their mission, touching the lives of tens of thousands of Newfoundlanders through their work in education and service. In 1994 the dream of a Christian Life Centre began to take shape among a group of the Sisters. What had been a Presentation School at 35 Barnes Rd in St. Johnโ€™s closed its doors in June of 1996. The school was renovated and renamed The Lantern, A Christian Life Centre. The Lantern opened its doors on September 21, 1997, the anniversary day of the arrival of the Presentation Sisters in Newfoundland. Since then, The Lantern has developed and evolved into a modern and accessible venue for programs and events in St. Johnโ€™s. Our mission is to curate meeting and event space where people can come and do the things that will help make our community a stronger and more vibrant place. We advocate for programs that contribute to our vision of community; those that seek to improve personal and corporate wellness, develop individual and collective spirituality, and pursue justice for the underprivileged and marginalized.

In all that we do at The Lantern we seek to uphold the principles of community, charity, service, and social and ecological justice that we inherited from the Presentation Sisters, dating back to Nano Nagle. And that legacy endures in our very name - The Lantern - which was inspired by the lantern that Nano would carry as she ministered to the poor late into the night. We hope that our Lantern will similarly be a shining light for the community here in St. John's.
