Dr. Anne Graham is the HSS Researcher of the Month!

Our researcher of the month, Anne Graham, studies sixteenth and seventeenth century French literature.

"Storytelling is at the heart of what it means to be human. It is through storytelling to that we make sense of our own experiences and get a chance to try to understand someone else’s experience.

Research in literature is all about storytelling: What makes a good story? What is the storyteller’s goal or motivation? What is the impact on the reader or spectator? ... Literature is just storytelling that has come to us, eventually, through written form. Studying the kinds of stories others have told at different moments of history can help us to better understand the world and ourselves."

Project 1917 is dedicated to re-counting the events of that year from the perspectives of some of the historical figures on all sides of the revolution. Each historical figure has their own social media account, and their posts are taken from a wide range of sources: newspapers, letters, diaries, even poetry. These figures range from Tsar Nicholas II and his entourage to Vladimir Lenin, Leon Trotsky, and Alexandra Kollontai. Poets and authors, such as Anna Akhmatova and Vladimir Mayakosky, also have accounts and share their perspectives. Things are just heating up following the February Revolution! Sign up for updates from this fascinating project.

Vladimir Mayakovsky:

Citizens!
This is the first day of the workers’ deluge.
We come to the aid of the muddled-up world.
Let crowds rock the skies with their stamp and yelling!
