Did you know that Canada has been home to many trailblazing women who have made significant impacts in the aviation industry? From Elsie MacGill, the world's first female aircraft designer and engineer, to Eileen Vollick, Canada's first licensed female pilot, these trailblazing women have left an indelible mark on the aviation industry. Their courage, resilience, and determination continue to inspire us all to reach new heights and break barriers.

Who are you celebrating this International Women’s Day?

On this National Aviation Day, we honour the extraordinary contributions and enduring legacy of Captain Ernest Emery Harmon, a trailblazer whose indomitable spirit and groundbreaking achievements reshaped the course of aviation history.

Captain Harmon etched his name in the annals of aviation history with the monumental "Around-the-Rim" flight in 1919. Piloting the first-ever flight around the continental United States alongside his comrades, he braved challenges and pioneered new frontiers, setting the stage for future aerial endeavors.

His visionary prowess was exemplified in his prediction of the first transatlantic flight, foretelling a future where commercial aviation would become commonplace and transatlantic travel routine. Captain Harmon's foresight transcended his time, laying the groundwork for the modern aviation landscape we know today.

From setting airspeed records to flying es**rt for "Lucky Lindy" during his triumphant return flight, Captain Harmon's aerial feats captured the imagination of a nation and propelled aviation into uncharted territories.

Beyond his achievements in the skies, Captain Harmon's impact resonated deeply within the aviation community. As a commanding officer and mentor, he inspired countless individuals to reach for the stars and pursue their dreams with unwavering determination.

Today, we pay homage to Captain Ernest Emery Harmon, a visionary pioneer whose legacy continues to soar high above the clouds. The Stephenville Dymond International Airport, formerly the Ernest Harmon Air Force Base, is honoured to be a part of such an incredible piece of aviation history. ✈️
