One of the biggest challenges our Council inherited when we came into office was a severely delayed and backlogged building permit system that slowed down housing, infrastructure, and investment across our city.

For too long, outdated processes and inefficiencies created frustration for residents, builders, and businesses trying to move projects forward. Instead of accepting the status quo, our Council took action.

We’ve worked to modernize and streamline the permit process by improving internal systems, reducing red tape, introducing new technology, and launching innovative programs that help applicants identify zoning issues before they even submit their permits.

These changes are already helping reduce deficiencies, speed up approvals, and save valuable weeks in the review process. Today, Surrey now has one of the fastest building permit turnaround times in Canada — a major turnaround from the backlog and delays we inherited.

As Surrey continues to grow, our focus remains clear: build smarter, approve faster, and ensure our city is ready for the future with more housing, better infrastructure, and a process that works for people — not against them. 🏗️

Too many families face barriers when it comes to accessing swimming lessons. That’s why our Council unanimously supported Mayor Brenda Locke’s initiative to explore making the first three levels of City swim lessons free for Surrey children ages 3–12.

This initiative is about more than swimming — it’s about confidence, safety, affordability, and making sure every child in Surrey has the opportunity to learn lifesaving skills and feel safe in and around the water.

The City’s road and infrastructure upkeep is a responsibility that requires consistent attention and long-term planning.

In past years, maintenance has not always kept pace with the rapid growth and demand on our road network. Our focus has been clear — catch up on repairs today while planning ahead for tomorrow.

In 2025 alone, 10,388 potholes were repaired across the city. That work is part of a broader effort to improve road safety, reduce long-term costs, and ensure our infrastructure is ready for future growth.

We’re committed to not just maintaining Surrey’s roads, but actively preparing and expanding for the future.

The new 20 Avenue and Highway 99 overpass project will improve east-west connectivity, reduce congestion on nearby routes like 24 Avenue, and support the rapid growth happening across Grandview Heights and South Surrey. The project includes a new four-lane overpass, road widening, traffic signal upgrades, and improved pedestrian and cycling access.

Another major step forward for South Surrey’s future infrastructure. 🏗️🚗

The Newton Community Centre is officially moving into the construction phase.

With boots already on the ground for road and civil works, Surrey Council has now awarded the pre-construction and design services contract for what will become the largest capital project investment in Surrey’s history.

The future 175,000 sq. ft. community hub will bring recreation, culture, childcare, arts spaces, and a brand-new library under one roof in the heart of Newton.

At the same time, crews are already working on the 70 Avenue extension, upgraded roads, sidewalks, cycling infrastructure, and utilities to improve direct access to the future facility and support future Bus Rapid Transit connections.

This is a major step forward for Newton — and proof that long-awaited investments in community infrastructure are finally becoming reality. 👷‍♂️🏗️

Surrey has been aggressively cutting red tape, streamlining approvals, reducing permit timelines by up to 75%, introducing guaranteed permitting timelines, speeding up rezoning reviews, and making major process improvements to help projects get built faster.

From high-rises in City Centre to townhomes, rental housing, and missing middle developments across our neighbourhoods, Surrey is taking real action to tackle the housing shortage and create more supply for a rapidly growing city.

At the same time, major investments in roads, transit, utilities, recreation facilities, and infrastructure are helping support that growth and prepare Surrey for the future.

The reality is simple: you cannot improve affordability without increasing housing supply — and Surrey is leading the way in getting homes approved and under construction. 🚧🏘️

When our council took office, Surrey’s roads had been neglected for years and critical infrastructure was struggling to keep up with the rapid growth of our city. Corridors like 64 Avenue needed major investment, long-term planning, and immediate action to prepare Surrey for the future.

The transformation of 64 Avenue between 177 Street and 184 Street is a perfect example of that progress — expanding from 2 lanes to 4 lanes to improve traffic flow, reduce congestion, and create safer, more efficient travel for residents. 🚧🚗

Projects like this are about more than just roads — they’re about building the infrastructure needed for a growing city. Surrey Connect remains committed to delivering the transportation improvements our communities deserve and preparing Surrey for the future.
