Welcome address to open the 2026 Toronto Garrison Officers’ Ball

2026 Toronto Garrison Officers’ Ball - Welcome Address by Lieutenant-Colonel Adam West, Commanding Officer

The Queen’s York Rangers (1st American Regiment)(RCAC), The Royal Regiment of Canada

My name is Lieutenant-Colonel Adam West. As you can tell from my bright red scarlet mess dress, I am the commanding officer of The Queen’s York Rangers (1st American Regiment). In this capacity, I have the honour to welcome you to the 2026 Toronto Garrison Officers’ Ball.

This year’s ball carries the theme Building the Future on Centuries of Service.

The theme recognizes the role The Queen’s York Rangers played in building York—now Toronto—and greater Upper Canada, now Ontario. Just as today, the Rangers’ of old’s contributions to Canada extended beyond defence, helping to create the civic and physical foundations of the province.

The contribution is reflected in the streets named for Rangers - Simcoe (the first lieutenant governor), Yonge, and Dundas.

Over the years, the regiment has transformed, just as it transformed the province. Now is one such period of transformation.

I stand before you today as commanding officer of not only the Rangers but also The Royal Regiment of Canada. The two units have come together to form the York Garrison Tactical Group, with the objectives of growing both units, expanding our community footprint, and enhancing our training.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank the ball planning committee and the Regimental Council. An event like this cannot be executed without the hard work of a great team. Thanks to their hard work and dedication, I think you all will agree, that this team, chaired by Captain Jon Davey have created a great event.

Canada Company was a wonderful sponsor of the Toronto Garrison Officers’ Ball. Thank you very much for your tremendous support.

On April 11, Canada Company and friends had the privilege of attending the 207th Toronto Garrison Officers’ Ball, hosted by The Queen’s York Rangers (1st American Regiment).

This longstanding tradition celebrates the dedication, leadership, and service of officers, alongside the many supporters of the military community across the GTA. It was an exceptional evening of connection and appreciation, and a meaningful opportunity to recognize the contributions of the units and individuals who serve in so many ways.

We are proud to stand alongside those who serve and support Canada’s military community.

Service, Sacrifice, and Partnership at the Toronto Garrison Officers' Ball

Excerpts from remarks by Mike Bonner, BMO Bank of Montreal, April 11, 2026

At BMO, we have long believed that institutions, like individuals, are defined not only by what they do, but by who they stand beside and what they leave behind. This is not a symbolic relationship for us at BMO; It's personal. It reflects the deep respect we have for the sacrifices made by members of the Canadian Armed Forces and their families.

We debated whether to show that video in the lead-up to this evening. There are some dark moments in it. I chose to share it because it does not hold back. It reminds us all of the cost of freedom, and educates a new generation on the ultimate sacrifice made by so many.

For generations, the Canadian military has stood in defence of our country, our values, and our communities. And for generations, BMO has been proud to stand alongside the women and men who serve.

Tonight, I want to recognize the extraordinary role played by Canada’s Reservists, and in particular the men and women of the Toronto Garrison.

You represent something uniquely Canadian.

You serve our country while building civilian careers, supporting families, and contributing to your communities.

You bring military discipline, resilience, and leadership into the workplace; often quietly, always consistently.

And when duty calls, you answer without hesitation.

We are proud to support Reservists through understanding, flexibility, and respect, and to benefit from the experience and perspective they bring with them. The strength of Canada’s defence lies not only in equipment and strategy, but in people.

To the officers and senior leaders in this room: thank you for your leadership and stewardship of those who serve.

To the families who support this service, often behind the scenes, I thank you for your sacrifice and your strength.

And to every member of the Canadian Armed Forces and Reserve who carries the responsibility of defending this country: please know that your service matters, and it is deeply valued.

At BMO, our commitment to the Canadian defence community is not symbolic; it is enduring.

Thank you for your service. Merci pour votre sare-vice.

Thank you for your leadership. Thank you for being stewards of an enduring legacy.

Duty and Dignity: Honouring Service at the 2026 Toronto Officers’ Garrison Ball

Excerpts from Master of Ceremonies Remarks by HCol (retd) Darrell Bricker

April 11, 2026

The Garrison Ball is the one night each year when the officers of the Toronto Garrison come together not simply to celebrate, but to recognize a shared commitment to service in Canada’s largest city. Yes, it is an opportunity to dress up, enjoy each other’s company, and I must say, everyone looks magnificent tonight. But what brings us together matters far more than ceremony.

This evening is about honouring the service you give every day, and the families who make that service possible. No one serves alone. Behind every member of the Canadian Armed Forces stands a family that carries its own share of sacrifice, support, and quiet duty.

So, tonight is not about those of us on the dais. It is about you. It is about the men and women in uniform who serve this city and this country, often without recognition, always without hesitation. And it is about the families beside you, whose contribution is no less real for being less visible.

This is not a night of remembrance. It is not about the past. It is about living service, the commitment, discipline, and sacrifice that continue every day and that help keep this country secure, strong, and worthy of the trust Canadians place in you.

And finally, a word about Honorary Colonels. The emphasis is on the first word. Our role is to honour, not to be honoured. All the Honoraries here tonight are proud to stand with you, and to recognize the example you set through your service.
