Landlords Are People Too

I saw this billboard in Michigan today, and honestly, it hit home.

Behind every rental property is a person. A person who worked, sacrificed, took a risk, signed a mortgage, pays taxes, fixes things at midnight, deals with insurance, and carries the financial responsibility when something goes wrong.

Being a landlord doesn’t make someone greedy.
Owning property doesn’t make someone the enemy.
And expecting a tenant to follow a lease doesn’t make you heartless.

We need to stop treating housing providers and tenants like opposing teams.

Good tenants deserve safe, well-maintained homes and to be treated with dignity.

Good landlords deserve to be treated with respect, to receive their rent, to have their property cared for, and to have reasonable laws that allow them to operate without being financially destroyed.

At the end of the day, landlords are people too. They have families. They have bills. They have mortgages. They have fears, responsibilities, and dreams.

We can advocate for tenants without demonizing landlords.

We can protect renters without destroying the people who provide the rental housing.

And we can believe that fairness should go both ways.

Don’t let the loudest voices convince you that one side has to lose for the other side to win.

Housing works best when we remember there’s a human being on both sides of the lease.

Thank You, Vanessa Oake Hogan Vanessa! 🏡

A huge thank you to Vanessa Oake Hogan , Broker/Owner, for inviting me to speak with your brokerage in Peterborough today about what’s REALLY happening in Ontario’s rental housing industry.

Vanessa deserves a lot of credit for making sure her Realtors understand that representing a buyer or seller of a tenanted property is about much more than the real estate transaction. The rules, risks and responsibilities are changing and Realtors need to know what those changes mean for their clients.

We covered:

🏠 What Realtors need to know when representing a buyer purchasing a tenanted property
🏠 What to consider when representing a seller with tenants in place
🏠What clients need to understand before investing in residential rental properties
❄️ The new AC rules
🏡 Changes to personal-use rules
💰 New non-payment of rent rules
⏰ The importance of persistent late rent payments
📊 FrontLobby monthly rent reporting & debt reporting
📜 Bill 10 and what it means for housing providers

But most importantly, we talked about why understanding the rental side of real estate matters.

A realtor who understands the Residential Tenancies Act, the Landlord and Tenant Board, tenant-related risks and the rapidly changing legislative landscape can help their clients make better, more informed decisions.

I love seeing brokerages like Vanessa’s take the initiative to educate their Realtors instead of waiting until a problem lands on their desk.

Education is advocacy. And informed Realtor make for better-informed buyers, sellers, investors, landlords and tenants.

Thank you again, Vanessa, for opening the conversation and for recognizing how important this information is to the real estate industry.

If you’re a Broker/Owner or Realtor who wants to bring this conversation to your brokerage, I’d be happy to connect.

The rental housing landscape is changing quickly. Your clients need to understand it and so do you.

KAYLA UNFILTERED -THE HOUSING CALL-IN -SHOW

What happens when the people we’re counting on to provide rental housing are told to do MORE… pay MORE… comply with MORE… while still being expected to keep housing “affordable”?

At what point does the math stop making sense?

In this episode of Kayla Unfiltered, I’m joined by Sarah Molnar, Director of Operations at Paragon Property Management, for a raw, unfiltered conversation about what housing policy actually looks like on the ground.

We’re going beyond the headlines and asking the questions nobody wants to ask.

- What happens when municipalities start creating their own rules around rental housing and renovations?

-Who REALLY pays when new requirements, heat standards, licensing, inspections and compliance costs are introduced?

-Are publicly funded housing providers being held to the same standards as private housing providers?

- At what point does a private landlord become a housing subsidizer?

And if Ontario says it desperately needs more rental housing… why would anyone invest here?

And then we take the conversation straight into municipal elections.

Because housing policy isn’t just happening at Queen’s Park.

It’s happening in city halls across Ontario -through zoning, approvals, licensing, property standards, permits, fees, inspections, taxes and bylaws.

So here’s the question every candidate should be prepared to answer:

If you say you support affordable housing… what are you actually going to do to make it easier, not harder, to provide it?

This conversation isn’t about landlords vs. tenants.

It’s about what happens when policy, affordability and the reality of providing housing collide.

And trust me…
Sarah and I are NOT holding back. 🎙️🔥

If you’re a landlord, property manager, realtor, investor, tenant, taxpayer or elected official, this is a conversation you need to watch.

And if you think these conversations need to be happening across Ontario…
SHARE THIS VIDEO.

Because we can’t solve the housing crisis by pretending we don’t have a policy problem.

LANDLORDS -DEADLINE AUGUST 24

The City is asking for feedback on rental housing licensing.

I don’t support landlord licensing , I believe it adds unnecessary red tape, costs, and bureaucracy.

But this post isn’t about telling you what to think.

It’s about making sure you actually respond to the survey.

They’re asking for details like:
🏠 What you own and where
💰 Whether you support a $735 licensing fee
🏠 Whether licensing should be mandatory
📊 Why you support or oppose it

And you also get up to 5,000 characters to explain your answer.

👉 Don’t just click boxes, explain your position.

📢 Don’t let your silence become a statistic.

Complete the survey. Share it. Speak your mind.

Yesterday I did something I don’t normally do.

I went canvassing. 👊

I don’t usually knock on doors for politicians. In fact, I’m pretty picky about who I’ll put my time, energy and reputation behind.

But I will canvass for a double-lung transplant survivor who is one of the most kickass councillors Cambridge has.

And I will absolutely canvass for someone who isn’t doing this because she needs the money, she’s doing it because she genuinely loves her community. ❤️

That person is Councillor Helen Shwery .

Helen has been through hell and back, and somehow came out the other side with even more fight in her.

She asks the hard questions.
She holds people accountable.
She doesn’t just sit quietly and go along with the crowd.
And she actually gives a damn about the people she represents.

And here’s the funny part…

I don’t even live in Ward 1. 😂

But I don’t need to live in someone’s ward to recognize a good councillor when I see one.

So today, I knocked on doors, talked to residents and proudly supported Helen, not because I have to, but because I want to.

She’s doing this for the love of her community.

And I’m doing this for the love of her. ❤️

Politics needs more people who genuinely care, more people willing to ask uncomfortable questions, and more people who aren’t afraid to hold everyone accountable, regardless of who they are.

So thank you, Helen, for fighting for City of Cambridge .

And thank you for letting me spend a few hours fighting alongside you.

Now let’s get this woman back in that chair for ward 1 👊🔥

08/06/2026

People and their trailers were removed from a carpool lot in Cambridge in a matter of hours.

No hearing.
No years of waiting.
No lengthy legal battle.

Now compare that to a housing provider whose tenant stops paying rent, racks up thousands in arrears, damages a property, or refuses to leave.

That landlord can wait months, sometimes years ,while carrying the financial burden.

Think about that.

We have created a housing system where government can quickly remove people from public land, but private housing providers can spend years trying to regain possession of their own property.

That’s not a housing solution. That’s a broken system.

The people living in those trailers are not the problem. They are a symptom of a much bigger housing crisis.

Many are working, trying to save money, and trying to find a path back into stable housing.

So taxpayers deserve to ask:

Where is all the money going?

Waterloo Region spent $65.5 million toward homelessness initiatives.

Where are the results?

How much is reaching people who need housing?
How much is going toward administration, overhead, consultants, and duplicated services?

Every election cycle we hear promises for more funding, more programs, and more announcements but where are the conversations about the root causes?

Here’s what we need:

A functioning Landlord and Tenant Board timely access to justice for everyone.

Accountability for taxpayer dollars, measure outcomes, not just spending.

Better coordination of services, stop duplicating programs and focus resources where they make the biggest impact.

Policies that keep good housing providers in the market, because losing rental housing hurts everyone.

After years of advocating for housing providers, I’ll keep saying what many don’t want to hear:

Housing providers, tenants, and taxpayers are all paying the price for a system that isn’t working.

The problem isn’t one side.

The problem is the system.

When rental providers leave the market, tenants lose options. When people can’t afford housing, they end up in trailers, vehicles, and encampments.

Ontario doesn’t need another announcement.

Ontario needs action.
