Serve-Engaging Youth For Change

Serve-Engaging Youth For Change Non-profit organization fostering youth development and community development. Registered Charity #14090 4855 RR0001

Serve works with diverse youth with barriers who are 13 to 24 years old using experiential learning and hands-on activities. Youth are facilitated and supported to make positive changes in themselves and in communities. By engaging young people in meaningful leadership roles we create an opportunity for them to learn and grow. Youth participants discover their self-worth as they realize that other

s need and value them. The result: they become leaders and role models as they achieve their own personal goals.

Serve is looking for Board Members and Committee Members. Please read more for details:

Serve (formally Serve Canada Youth Service Organization)
Position Type: Board Member/Committee Member
Region: Ontario – Metro Toronto
Date Posted: August 21, 2013
Deadline: September 6, 2013

Serve engages diverse youth in experience-based education, teamwork, and community involvement so that they may establish personal direction, overcome obstacles, achieve goals and become involved citizens and leaders. We are committed to providing programs that empower young people to take ownership of their future and embrace a lifelong commitment to volunteerism and community development. Our programs, for youth ages 13 – 24, operate in communities in Toronto, and address issues such as homelessness and poverty, the environment, violence prevention and community development.
We are currently seeking volunteers with diverse backgrounds, experience and expertise to serve on our Board of Directors or to volunteer with one of our Board or Event Committees. We would like to engage individuals with one or more of the following:

• commitment to youth issues and community development
• experience around equity issues and diversity and a commitment to anti-racism, anti-oppression
• experience in program development, ideally in the non-profit sector
• fundraising and marketing
• experience with social enterprise projects
In addition to participation in monthly Board meetings, Board members are required to participate in one of the Board's committees – Fundraising, Marketing, Finance, Program Advisory or Governance and Board Development. Attendance at fundraising events (one to two annually) and youth graduation is expected. The average time commitment for a Board member is 5 - 10 hours per month. Meetings are generally held at our Toronto office or by conference call.
Board and Event Committee volunteers are asked to attend meetings as and when they occur. Board Committees, listed above, generally meet once per month. Event Committees organize our fundraising events and meet as often as the event requires. The time commitment varies depending on the committee.
Serve is committed to creating equal opportunities for all, and we encourage members of equity seeking groups to apply.
Send your resume via email to the contact person listed below. Once your resume is received, a follow-up phone call will be made and interviews will occur in September. Candidates selected for the Board of Directors will be required to stand for election at the annual general meeting of Serve’s membership.
Thank you for your interest in Serve.

"Decide in your heart of hearts what really excites and challenges you, and start moving your life in that direction. Every decision you make, from what you eat to what you do with your time tonight, turns you into who you are tomorrow, and the day after that. Look at who you want to be, and start sculpting yourself into that person. You may not get exactly where you thought you’d be, but you will be doing things that suit you in a profession you believe in. Don’t let life randomly kick you into the adult you don’t want to become."
--Cmdr. Chris Hadfield (a Canadian astronaut who was the first Canadian to walk in space).
