Evidence of destruction of mass grave site in Iran

Iranian authorities are banning members of the persecuted Baha’i minority from burying their loved ones in empty plots at a cemetery near Tehran that they have used for decades, instead insisting they bury them between existing graves within the cemetery or at the nearby Khavaran mass grave site for victims of the 1988 prison massacres, said Amnesty International today.

“As well as causing further pain and anguish to the already persecuted Baha’i minority by depriving them of their rights to give their loves ones a dignified burial in line with their religious beliefs, Iran’s authorities are wilfully destroying a crime scene.”

The trials of arbitrarily detained dual nationals #MehranRaoof, who is British-Iranian, and #NahidTaghavi, who is German-Iranian, will be held on 28 April 2021 before Branch 26 of the Revolutionary Court of Tehran.

Ahead of their trial, we renew our calls on the Iran's authorities to immediately & unconditionally release #MehranRaoof and #NahidTaghavi, who both are prisoners of conscience detained solely for peacefully exercising their rights to freedom of expression & association

Pending their releases, Amnesty International is calling on the Iranian authorities to provide Mehran Raoof and Nahid Taghavi w/consular access, including permitting representatives from each country to attend the 28 April trial hearing before Branch 26 of the Revolutionary Court of Tehran.

Urgent Action: Jamshid Sharmahd, a 66-year-old German-Iranian political dissident, is at risk of being convicted in a grossly unfair trial and sentenced to death. He has been arbitrarily detained in Iran for over eight months, at times in circumstances akin to enforced disappearance, without trial and access to an independent lawyer of his choosing and consular assistance. State TV broadcast his forced “confessions”, in breach of his right to a fair trial. There are fears that he is not receiving adequate health care for his serious medical conditions.

Today, 10 April, marks 1 year that Iran’s ministry of intelligence has arbitrary detained university students #AliYounesi and #AmirHosseinMoradi.

Amnesty International calls on the Iranian authorities to immediately release #AliYounesi and #AmirHosseinMoradi.

For one year they have been held without trial in section 209 of Tehran’s Evin prison, under the control of the ministry of intelligence, and have been denied access to an independent lawyer of their own choosing.

While detained in separate rooms, #AliYounesi and #AmirHosseinMoradi have been sleeping on the floor and also, at times, detained alongside individuals accused of violent offenses. Amnesty believes they remain held in section 209 to pressure them to make forced “confessions”.

Both #AliYounesi and #AmirHosseinMoradi have been charged with national security offenses, including “gathering and colluding to commit crimes against national security” and “spreading propaganda against the system”.

03/19/2021

Amnesty International is calling for the immediate release of labour rights activist Arash (Jaber) Johari, who is serving an unjust lengthy prison sentence in Iran solely in relation to his peaceful advocacy & support for workers’ rights.

Amnesty International understands that Arash Johari’s activism included being part of a group on the mobile messaging app Telegram, which posted information about politics & human rights issues, including workers’ rights, and that several others from the group were also arrested. In court verdict, reviewed by Amnesty, prosecution authorities cited acts like “managing illegal groups on social networks” & “attending meetings w/illegal leftist groups, communicating w/leaders of these groups, even those abroad who are hostile” as “evidence” of criminal acts.

After a grossly unfair trial before Branch 26 of the Revolutionary Court of Tehran, Arash Johari, 28, was convicted and sentenced to:
▪️10 years in prison for “forming a group composed of more than two people with the purpose of disrupting national security”
▪️5 years for “gathering and colluding to commit crimes against national security” and
▪️1 year for “spreading propaganda against the system”

This totals a 16-year prison sentence. Under Iran’s sentencing guidelines, he is required to serve 10 years in prison. Arash was denied access to a lawyer during pre-trial detention and trial, which lasted approximately 45 minutes. His lawyer was only permitted access to his casefile after the conviction and sentence were issued.
Due to reprisals by Revolutionary Guard agents against Arash Johari and his family, Arash Johari did not appeal his conviction.

Arash Johari was arbitrarily arrested on 6 October 2020 at his home in Tehran by plainclothes agents from the intelligence unit of the Revolutionary Guards and forcibly disappeared for a month.
During this time the authorities concealed his fate and whereabouts from his family, who were trying to locate him. The family went to the prosecutor’s office of Evin prison, but they were not provided with any information about Arash. Arash later reported he’d been held in prolonged solitary confinement for a month after arrest, & it was only after he was transferred out of solitary confinement that his family learned where he was held.

He is currently serving his sentence in section 8 of Evin prison. Arash Johari was detained around the same time as several other labour rights activists across Iran in October 2020 in a coordinated crackdown to quash advocacy on workers’ rights.
