is aggrieved & outraged that the life of another young person – this time 16 yr old – was cut cruelly short in connection to Iran’s abusive compulsory veiling laws which perpetuate widespread & systematic human rights violations against women & girls.

On 28 Oct, Iranian state media reported that Armita Garawand died after being in a coma since 1 Oct. That day, she sustained critical injuries and fell unconscious in the Tehran metro following reports she was assaulted by an enforcer of Iran’s degrading compulsory veiling laws.

For weeks, Iran's authorities waged a concerted campaign of denial & distortion to conceal the truth about the circumstances leading to 's death. Then at her funeral they shamelessly detained mourners to silence any calls for truth & justice.

Amnesty International calls on the international community to demand that Iran's authorities allow the UN Fact-Finding Mission and other independent monitors to enter the country to investigate the circumstances leading Armita Garawand’s hospitalization in a coma and death.

States must seek internat'l legal pathways to hold officials to account for ordering, planning & committing widespread & systematic HR violations against women & girls through compulsory veiling. Those found responsible for Armita Garawand’s critical injuries must face justice.

Iran’s authorities must immediately release anyone arbitrarily arrested for peacefully attending Armita Garawand’s funeral, including human rights lawyer Nasrin Sotoudeh, who was arbitrarily detained on 29 October in Tehran at the funeral.

Amnesty International is alarmed by reports on Iranian state media affiliated w/the Rev Guards that 16 yr old is in very poor health. She fell unconscious on 1 Oct at a Tehran metro after reports she was assaulted by an enforcer of Iran’s abusive compulsory veiling laws.

We re-iterate 's calls on the international community to demand that Iran's authorities allow the UN Fact-Finding Mission & other independent monitors to enter the country NOW to investigate the circumstances leading Armita Garawand’s hospitalization in a coma.

All health care decisions for Armita Garawand must be taken by healthcare professionals acting in full clinical independence and her parents, with medical decisions not overruled or ignored by non-medical authorities, including from security and intelligence bodies.

An Iranian court has sentenced journalists & to over a decade in prison each after a grossly unfair trial for investigating Mahsa/Zhina Amini’s death in custody. Journalism is NOT a crime! Iran's authorities must release the journalists NOW!

Niloufar Hamedi & Elaheh Mohammadi were among the first journalists to report on Mahsa/Zhina Amini’s hospitalization after she was arrested by Iran’s “morality” police amid credible torture reports. Security forces arrested them in Sept 2022 for investigating her death.
They were convicted of trumped-up national security-charges incl “collaborating w/hostile governments (USA)” & “spreading propaganda against the system”. Under Iran’s sentencing guidelines, Niloufar Hamedi & Elaheh Mohammadi will serve 7 and 6 years in prison, respectively.
They were denied the right to a fair trial including through the denial of access to legal representation for 8 months following their arrests. They were only allowed to see their lawyers the day prior to trial. One of their lawyers was also arbitrarily arrested in Dec 2022.
In the past week, state media, including the judiciary’s media arm, broadcast an outrageous propaganda video to justify the conviction/sentencing of Niloufar Hamedi & Elaheh Mohammadi, showing their journalistic activities and women's rights activism as “evidence” of “crimes”.
For more than a year, Iran's authorities have harassed Mahsa/Zhina Amini’s family, sentenced their lawyer to prison, and now jailed the journalists who investigated her death, all in a despicable campaign to cover up the truth & silence those seeking justice & accountability.
Since the ” uprising, Iranian authorities have arbitrarily arrested at least 90 journalists & other media workers and 60 lawyers. calls for the release of all journalists, lawyers and others detained for peacefully exercising their rights.

Mahsa Amini has been awarded the EU’s top human rights prize.

This year's Sakharov Prize has been awarded to Jina Mahsa Amini and the Woman, Life and Freedom Movement sparked by her death in custody in Iran.

The award, named for the Soviet dissident Andrei Sakharov, was created in 1988 to honour individuals or groups who defend human rights and fundamental freedoms.

“One year ago today, the world woke up to the horrifying news about the mass unlawful killings of dozens of men, women and children by Iran's authorities within the span of a few hours on the evening of 21 Sep during the uprising.

Days after these killings obtained a leaked official document, dated 21 Sept, with a high level order to crush the protests at any cost "going as far as causing deaths" of protesters. Those responsible for the crimes under international law must be held to account.”

Iran’s parliament has passed a new bill that would impose further draconian penalties severely violating women’s and girls’ rights as well as increasing prison terms and fines for defying Iran’s degrading and discriminatory compulsory veiling laws.

This bill is an all-out assault is part of the authorities’ ongoing efforts to crush the spirit of resistance among those who dared to stand up against decades of oppression and inequality as part of the popular uprising.

This bill will further entrench violence and discrimination against women and girls in Iran.

09/01/2023

Today’s death in custody of 31-year-old arbitrarily detained protester again exposes the Iranian authorities’ abhorrent assault on the right to life amid an ongoing human rights crisis and must be effectively and independently investigated.
Iranian state media reported that he “died” on 31 August after he was transferred from Noshahr prison, Mazandaran province, to hospital. According to information gathered by Amnesty International, he did not suffer from any pre-existing medical conditions prior to his arrest on 22 September 2022, which took place in relation to the popular uprising sparked by the death in custody of Mahsa/Zhina Amini on 16 September 2022.
Iran's authorities subjected Javad Rouhi to a litany of crimes under internat'l law & other human rights violations, including enforced disappearance & torture & other ill-treatment to force him to “confess” to entering and throwing items from inside a traffic police booth.
According to information obtained by , the authorities subjected him to enforced disappearance by concealing his fate and whereabouts from his family for 6 wks. During this time, he was held in solitary confinement in a Revolutionary Guards detention centre located w/in Tir Kola prison in Sari, Mazandaran province. According to primary sources, he was subjected to severe beatings and floggings, including on the soles of his feet and while being tied to a pole, given electric shocks with tasers, exposed to freezing temperatures, and sexually assaulted by having ice put on his testicles for 48 hours. Revolutionary Guards agents repeatedly pointed a gun to Javad Rouhi's head and threatened to shoot him if he did not make forced “confessions”.
As a result of the torture and other ill-treatment, Javad Rouhi suffered rotator cuff injuries, urinary incontinence, digestive complications and mobility and speech impairment for which he was denied access to adequate health care.
In Dec 2022, following a grossly unfair trial before a Revolutionary Court which relied on his torture-tainted “confessions,” he was unjustly convicted of “enmity against God” and “corruption on earth” in relation to his participation in the protests which he had repeatedly told the court was peaceful.
He was also convicted of “apostasy” and sentenced to death based on his torture-tainted “confessions” that he burned a copy of the Quran.
Javad Rouhi was denied access to an independent lawyer of his own choosing during his trial, which consisted of just one hearing under an hour long.
In May 2023, the Iranian state media announced that the Supreme Court had overturned Javad Rouhi’s three convictions and death sentences, and returned his case back to a lower court for retrial.
Amnesty International has documented the Iranian authorities’ consistent refusal to adequately investigate the causes and circumstances of scores of suspicious deaths in custody since January 2010 involving credible reports of lethal use of fi****ms and teargas and torture and other ill-treatment, including the denial of access to healthcare.
All those reasonably suspected of responsibility for crimes under international law against Javad Rouhi must be criminally investigated and held to account in fair proceedings.
States must also exercise universal jurisdiction over all Iranian officials reasonably suspected of criminal responsibility for crimes under international law and other grave violations of human rights, including enforced disappearance and torture and other ill-treatment.

05/27/2023

Amnesty International welcomes the release of Belgian aid worker & is relieved he will soon be with his family in Belgium. He was unjustly imprisoned in Iran since February 2022 and subjected to enforced disappearance, torture and other ill-treatment.
Belgian authorities must criminally investigate & issue arrest warrants for officials responsible for torture, enforced disappearance or other crimes under international law against Olivier on basis of the principles of universal jurisdiction & passive personality jurisdiction.
Amnesty is deeply disturbed that he was only freed and allowed to leave Iran through a deal between Belgium and Iran, which enabled the premature release of Iranian intelligence agent, , and diminished the effect of his conviction and 20-year prison sentence.
By transferring Assadollah Asadi to Iran, Belgium government has contributed to impunity for extraterritorial targeting of Iranian dissidents for extrajudicial ex*****ons & torture & undermined victims' rights to justice, reparations & guarantee non-recurrence of violations.
Iranian dissidents abroad will now be exposed to increased risk of attack by Iranian agents as a result of international community failing in their obligations to punish attempted extrajudicial ex*****ons &other human rights violations by Iranian authorities extraterritorially.
Amnesty International is deeply concerned that the prisoner swap risks emboldening the Iranian authorities to continue to commit hostage-taking and other crimes under international law.
To mitigate these risks Belgian authorities must conduct investigations into whether the deprivation of Olivier Vandecasteele’s liberty amounted to crime of hostage-taking & promote accountability through public statements & investigation/prosecution of suspected perpetrators.

Amid Iranian authorities’ horrific ex*****on spree since late April 2023, is gravely alarmed by the Fars province justice depart. announcing on 21 May that 2 Afghan men, and , will be publicly executed “soon” in Shiraz after their convictions for “corruption on earth” (efsad-e fel arz) & “armed rebellion against the state” (baghi) were upheld. On 18 Mar, the judiciary announced their convictions & death sentences in connection to what state media reported was an armed attack in Shiraz on 26 Oct '22.
Carrying out ex*****ons in public adds to the already cruel, inhuman and degrading nature of the death penalty, and has a dehumanizing effect on the victim and brutalizes members of the public.
Such a public display of state-sanctioned killings perpetuates violence, and exposes once again how Iran's authorities are intensifying their use the death penalty as a tool of political repression against the people in Iran to torment and terrorize them by any means and impose silence and subservience through brute force.
All states must urgently call on Iran's authorities to immediately halt plans to execute Mohammad Ramez Rashidi and Naeim Hashem Ghotali.
All states must also denounce, in the strongest possible terms, the Iranian authorities’ shocking use of the death penalty and urge for them to immediately establish a moratorium on ex*****ons.

Their group trial was grossly unfair. They were denied access to their lawyer, even at trial. Authorities have not given them copies of their verdict. A Revolutionary Court used their torture-tainted “confessions” to sentence them to death. They could be executed at any time.
Sources told that Revolutionary Guards agents subjected Habib Deris (second photo) to beatings, sleep deprivation, electric shocks to his fingertips and ni***es, and hung him upside down while submerging his head into a large container filled with water.
Revolutionary Guards agents tied Habib Deris to a table, put a wet towel over his face & subjected him to waterboarding by pouring water over the towel, causing him to suffocate. They beat him so much that his body was covered with blood/bruises and his skin was peeling off.
Revolutionary Guards agents gave Moein Khanfari (third photo) electric shocks and tied him in a painful stress position while beating and flogging him.
Revolutionary Guards agents blindfolded Ali Mojadam (fourth photo) & tied him next to an electrocution machine. They connected wires to his ears and, while still blindfolded, moved his hand onto a dial on the machine & told him to move it w/his fingers which sent electric shocks to his body.
Revolutionary Guards agents detained Ali Mojadam’s wife and young child to force him to “confess” to whatever the authorities wanted in front of a video camera. His forced “confession” was broadcast in a propaganda video on state television prior to his trial.

Amnesty urges to immediately halt any plans to execute Ali Mojadam, Moein Khanfari, Mohammad Reza Moghadam, Salem Mousavi, Adnan Ghobeishavi and Habib Deris, quash their convictions and death sentences, and release them NOW!

05/12/2023

Amnesty International is gravely concerned that , and are at imminent risk of ex*****on at central Esfahan prison (also known as Dastgerd prison) after Iran’s Supreme Court upheld their unjust convictions and death sentences in early May 2023.
The men were sentenced to death in relation to protests in Esfahan following the death in custody of Mahsa (Zhina) Amini that sparked nationwide protests. The men were arrested in mid-Nov & their trial, which took place b/w late Dec 2022 & early Jan 2023, was grossly unfair.
In an undated voice note from prison, Majid Kazemi said he was subjected to repeated torture & other ill-treatment, including beatings, to make “confessions”; the men were also denied access to lawyers, and they were forced to again make forced “confessions” during trial.
On 9 Jan 2023, state media affiliated w/the judiciary announced that the three men were convicted of “enmity against god” and sentenced to death in connection w/“drawing a [handgun] from the waist” during protests. Two others tried with them were sentenced to prison terms.
must immediately halt any plans to execute Majid Kazemi, Saleh Mirhashemi and Saeed Yaghoubi, quash their convictions & death sentences, and urgently establish an official moratorium on all ex*****ons with a view of abolishing the death penalty.

05/08/2023

Today's ex*****on of Yousef Mehrdad & Sadrollah Fazeli Zare for "apostasy" marks a shocking new low for Iran's authorities & only furthers Iran’s pariah status. They were hanged solely for social media posts in a grotesque assault on the rights to life & freedom of religion.
The men were executed in relation to social media activities on charges of:

- apostasy
- promoting atheism
- insulting the Prophet of Islam
- insulting Islamic sanctities

The use of the death penalty for such acts is another nail in the coffin of religious freedom in Iran.
Their ex*****ons come amid a steep rise in the use of the death penalty by the Iranian authorities in recent weeks, including the ex*****on of Swedish-Iranian dissident Habib Chaab (Asyoud) on 6 May after a grossly unfair trial marred by torture and forced "confessions".
Without urgent international action, the Iranian authorities will continue to deploy the death penalty to torment and terrorize the entire population, crush protests & other forms of dissent, and enforce silence and subservience through brute force.

Iran's authorities must immediately release 64-year-old Irish-French national , who is arbitrarily detained in Vakilabad prison in Mashhad since his arrest on 3 October 2022 in the city while there on a trip.

Authorities must ensure Bernard Phelan is provided with regular phone calls to family, access to a lawyer of his own choosing & unhindered regular consular assistance from the Irish and French.
Bernard Phelan’s detention is arbitrary due to the gravity of fair trial rights violations, including right to an independent lawyer of his own choosing, to adequate defence & to meaningfully challenge the legality of his detention before an independent and impartial court.

Islamic Republic of Iran's authorities must immediately stop any plans to execute Swedish-Iranian dissident (Asyoud), and quash his unjust conviction & death sentence, which was upheld by the Supreme Court, raising fears that his ex*****on is imminent.

Habib Chaab’s trial before Branch 26 of the Revolutionary Court of Tehran, which convicted him of “corruption on earth” and sentenced him to death, concluded on 25 October 2022 and was grossly unfair.

Following Habib Chaab’s abduction in Türkiye shortly after his arrival from Sweden on 9 October 2020 and the authorities’ announcement of his detention in Iran on 31 October 2020 , Iranian state television aired propaganda videos showing him “confessing” to involvement in an armed attack on a military parade on 22 September 2018 in Ahvaz, Khuzestan province, in which over 20 people were killed according to Iranian state media.

By airing these forced “confessions” prior to his trial, the authorities violated Habib Chaab’s right to a fair trial, including to presumption of innocence, to not self-incriminate and to remain silent.

Amnesty International has also consistently held that the offence of “corruption on earth” fails to meet requirements for clarity and precision needed in criminal law and breaches the principle of legality and legal certainty.

Since 2019, Amnesty International has also documented two other cases involving the abduction of dissidents based abroad by Iran’s security and intelligence agents and their forcible return to Iran.

Dissident journalist was abducted from Iraq in October 2019 by the Revolutionary Guards, and forcibly returned to Iran. Iranian authorities executed him in December 2020 following a grossly unfair trial.

In July 2020, Iranian born US resident & German national was abducted in Dubai and arbitrarily detained in Iran, where he's been forcibly disappeared & tortured, and is at risk of ex*****on following being sentenced to death.
