The Iranian authorities have arrested thousands of people during the violent crackdown on nationwide protests. We previously documented protest detainees being subjected to torture, enforced disappearance, unfair trials, long prison terms & death sentences.

We are calling on the international community to take urgent action to protect the thousands of people detained over the past week in Iran from serious human rights violations. These individuals are at risk and need concrete actions, not words, from world leaders.

Iran: Deadly crackdown on protests against Mahsa Amini’s death in custody needs urgent global action

Iranian security forces are violently quashing largely peaceful protests sparked by the death in custody of . The barrage of gunfire unleashed on protesters has left at least 8 people dead and 100s injured.

We have collected evidence on the security forces’ unlawful use of birdshot and other metal pellets, teargas, water cannon, and beatings with batons to disperse protesters in .

The global rage and empathy over ’s death must be followed by concrete steps by the international community to tackle systemic impunity that has allowed widespread torture, extrajudicial ex*****ons and other unlawful killings by Iran's authorities to continue unabated.

World leaders must support calls for an independent international investigative and accountability mechanism to address the crisis of impunity in ✊

‏The circumstances leading to the suspicious death in custody of 22-year-old young woman , which include allegations of torture and other ill-treatment in custody, must be criminally investigated.
‏The so-called “morality police” in Tehran arbitrarily arrested her 3 days before her death while enforcing the country’s abusive, degrading and discriminatory forced veiling laws. All agents and officials responsible must face justice.

Amnesty International is outraged that Iran's authorities sentenced to death LGBTI rights defender Zahra Sedighi-Hamadani & another woman Elham Choubdar for “corruption on earth”. Amnesty International concerned their convictions & sentences are based on discriminatory reasons tied to the women's real or perceived sexual orientation or gender identity & for Zahra Sedighi-Hamadani, her peaceful LGBTI rights activism. Amnesty International calls on Iran's authorities to immediately release , an unjustly imprisoned journalist from the persecuted Gonabadi Dervish religious minority & pending his release, protect him from torture & other ill-treatment & grant him access to his family & lawyers.
On 27 August 2022, the authorities transferred from Adel Abad Prison in Shiraz, Fars Province, where he has been jailed since 2018, to a Ministry of Intelligence detention centre known as No.100 in Shiraz.
The transfer has sparked concerns about his safety, in particular because No.100 is notorious for the use of torture and other ill-treatment to extract “confessions”.
The authorities kept Kasra Nouri’s family and lawyers in the dark about his fate and whereabouts for three days until they allowed him to make a phone call and inform his family of his place of detention.
During the phone call, he told his family that he was undergoing interrogations in No.100 in relation to an unpublished statement which Kasra Nouri and other imprisoned activists and human rights defenders have endorsed.

Iran/Turkey: Fleeing Afghans unlawfully returned after coming under fire at borders

Iranian and Turkish security forces have repeatedly pushed back Afghans who attempt to cross their borders to reach safety, including by unlawfully opening fire on men, women and children, Amnesty International said today. In a new report, They don’t treat us like humans, the organization also documents numerous instances – mostly at the Iranian border – where security forces have shot directly at people as they climbed over walls or crawled under fences. Afghans who do manage to enter Iran or Turkey are routinely arbitrarily detained, and subjected to torture and other ill-treatment before being unlawfully and forcibly returned.

New report documents how Afghans fleeing life under the Taliban face horrific violations at the Iranian and Turkish borders.

Urgent Action: Iran’s persecuted Baha’i minority are suffering escalated attacks on their human rights. Since 31 July 2022, the authorities have raided dozens of Baha’i houses, detained at least 30 people, and subjected many more to interrogations, electronic ankle bracelets and threats of imprisonment in relation to their Baha’i faith. They have also ramped up confiscation and demolition of Baha’i properties.

Updated Urgent Action: In Apr 2022 a Revolutionary Court in Iran sentenced university students and prisoners of conscience & to 16 yrs in prison on spurious national security charges after a grossly unfair trial.

According to an informed source, they “confessed” under the threat of death and sexual violence after being transferred out of Section 209 of Tehran’s Evin Prison to a location outside prison, where Ministry of Intelligence agents warned them that prison regulations did not apply. Prior to their transfer, they were held in solitary confinement for nearly 60 days in violation of the absolute prohibition of torture and other ill-treatment.

Iran: Horrific wave of ex*****ons must be stopped

The Iranian authorities have embarked on an ex*****on spree, killing at least 251 people between 1 January and 30 June 2022, according to research by the Abdorrahman Boroumand Centre for Human Rights in Iran and Amnesty International. The organizations warned that if ex*****ons continue at this horrifying pace, they will soon surpass the total of 314 ex*****ons recorded for the whole of 2021.

At least 65 (26 %) of those executed since 2022 were members of Iran’s impoverished Baluchi ethnic minority, who make up about 5% of Iran’s population. Over half (38) were executed for drug-related offences.
“The disproportionate use of the death penalty against Iran’s Baluchi minority epitomizes the entrenched discrimination and repression they have faced for decades and further highlights the inherent cruelty of the death penalty, which targets the most vulnerable populations in Iran and worldwide,” said Roya Boroumand.

Belgian lawmakers must urgently ensure that a bill enacting a bilateral treaty between Iran and Belgium is fully consistent with Belgium’s obligations under international human rights.
In particular, the bill should include adequate judicial safeguards to prevent the treaty being used to grant impunity for state officials and agents responsible for serious human rights violations and crimes under international law.

The international community must use all diplomatic means available to stop the Iranian authorities from amputating the fingers of eight men, at least three of whom were convicted based on torture-tainted “confessions” following grossly unfair trials, said Amnesty International today.

Amputating prisoners’ fingers is torture, a crime under international law. Carrying out such heinous punishments is an abhorrent assault on human dignity. It is unacceptable that the Iranian authorities commit such criminal acts of cruelty with impunity.

Iran: UK government must investigate Iranian officials who held Nazanin-Zaghari Ratcliffe hostage

The UK government must investigate Iranian officials who are suspected of responsibility for the crime of hostage-taking against British-Iranian national Nazanin Zaghari-Ratcliffe to force the UK government to settle a decades-old debt, and where sufficient evidence exists, request their extradition in order to prosecute them in fair trials.

In a detailed analysis issued today, Amnesty International laid out compelling evidence that Iran’s detention of Nazanin Zaghari-Ratcliffe amounted to an act of hostage-taking, which is a crime under international law and highlighted the plight of other held dual and foreign nationals whose arbitrary detention may amount to hostage-taking.
