You can't watch a hockey game in Canada these days without being bombarded by sports betting ads, it's out of control.
A new analysis found that viewers were exposed to 3,000 gambling messages during just seven televised hockey games featuring Canadian teams, more than 400 messages per game.
Since Canada legalized single-event sports betting in 2021, gambling advertising has exploded. Celebrity endorsements, famous athletes and relentless promotions are normalizing gambling, including for young people who are especially vulnerable to these pressures.
As the NDP critic on health and mental health, I believe that ambling addiction is a serious public health issue. It can devastate families, undermine mental health and push people into financial hardship. We shouldn't be encouraging harmful behaviour every time Canadians turn on a hockey game.
That's why New Democrats support moving forward with federal legislation to establish a national framework for restricting sports betting advertising, including limits on celebrity and athlete endorsements, stronger protections for minors, and better prevention and treatment of gambling addiction.
We'll support the bill at Second Reading so it can be studied and strengthened at committee, with input from provinces, health experts, Indigenous communities and people affected by gambling harms.
Sports betting may be legal, but that doesn't mean gambling companies should have a free pass to advertise wherever, whenever and however they want.
It's time to put public health, especially the well-being of our kids, ahead of gambling industry profits. Please share this post with friends who share this concern and let me know your views.
