PERMITS REQUIRED TO BURN BRUSH AND DEBRIS
(May 16th)
The Government of Newfoundland and Labrador is reminding residents that forest fire season is now in effect throughout the province, and precautions are in place to help prevent wildfires and protect communities.
Officials say permits are required for anyone planning to burn brush or debris outdoors. The types of outdoor burning activities that are allowed or prohibited will depend on the daily Fire Weather Index for each region.
Under the province’s fire regulations;
- When the fire risk is listed as low or moderate, campfires are permitted under certain conditions.
- When the risk is high, campfires are still allowed with conditions, however all burn permits are cancelled.
- When the risk reaches very high or extreme, all outdoor fires are prohibited.
Residents are encouraged to check the daily fire hazard rating before starting any outdoor fire activity and to follow all provincial regulations and safety measures.
The province says these precautions are aimed at reducing the risk of forest fires during the warmer months, particularly during dry or windy conditions that can allow fires to spread quickly.
More information on fire hazard ratings, burn permits, and campfire regulations is available through the provincial government’s forestry and wildfire information pages.
