Broken service means that you stopped serving and then joined up again at a later date.
The current rules for the Canadian Forces decoration allow you to combine that service towards your medal or bars as long as there are no disciplinary actions which defer time.
Supplemental Reserve time is not service. What I mean by that is, your name is simply on file. You did not parade, train, or deploy with a unit in that time so it is not qualifying service.
Knowing these factors many folks had parents or grandparents that service during WW2 and rejoined for Korea or post WW2 and continued to serve but did not have their time calculated properly towards the CD.
Also some foreign service counts towards the CD as well. For example, many ex British service members joined up in Canada after the war.
It’s always worth checking to see the total years your loved one had in qualifying service.
12 years for the medal.
Every ten year increment after qualifying for the medal earns you a bar. 22,32,42 years etc.
And finally, anytime when someone decides to use the post nominals CD after their name, it is always written as CD regardless of how many bars you have earned.
