In West Hants you will find something inspiring in every nook & cranny: warm and welcoming people, nature trails, scenic wonders, award-winning restaurants, a variety of local craft spirits, unique shops and services, vibrant activities and events, lively farmers markets and an abundance of caring community organizations whose focus is helping others. Other days, we need help finding that inspirat

ion to get us out, active, and involved! Through ‘Inspire West Hants’ we want to promote all the wonderful things that are happening locally. Our goal is to grow and empower our collaborative, engaged and positive community voice. We want to share everything that makes West Hants an amazing place to live, work and play. September is Volunteer Month in West Hants!

Each year, West Hants invites the community to nominate deserving individuals, boards, and business for Volunteer Awards. We celebrate all of these nominees throughout the month of September.

From the list of nominations gathered in February, Council chooses one exemplary individual to represent West Hants at the Provincial Volunteer Awards.

The West Hants Regional Municipality is proud to re-announce that Roger Taylor has been selected as the 2026 Volunteer of the Year in recognition of his outstanding contributions to the region’s musical and cultural life.

For more than 20 years, Roger has shared his remarkable talents as a conductor, composer, and arranger with the Four Seasons Community Orchestra, enriching audiences and nurturing local musical talent. His passion for music and community has also inspired the creation of numerous performing groups over the years, including choral groups, small ensembles, bands, and other orchestral groups.

Through his leadership, Roger has earned the respect and admiration of countless musicians and music lovers alike. His dedication to collaboration and creativity continues to make a lasting impact on the cultural vitality of West Hants.

Rogers exceptional volunteerism has been recognized many times before, including honours such as ATV Maritimer of the Week, The Rotary Paul Harris Fellowship, the Nova Scotia Department of Education Arts Award, the Mud Creek Volunteer Award, and the Queen Elizabeth II Award.

The Municipality is honoured to celebrate Roger Taylor’s decades of service and leadership, and we thank him for his unwavering commitment to our community.

West Hants is a vibrant and active community, and that’s because of its people and volunteers!

September is Volunteer Month in West Hants! Thats a great reason to celebrate, afterall, volunteers are the HEART of West Hants!

For a moment, lets imagine a West Hants without volunteers? No fire department or auxiliary, no West Hants Ground Search and Rescue, no caremongers, no food banks, no Hants Learning Network Association, no West Hants Uniacke Community Health Board, no community halls or any of the programs that happen in those spaces, no Hantsport Memorial Community Centre, Christmas Angels, no sport organizations or coaches, no fundraisers for people in need, no agricultural fairs, no youth leadership clubs, no animal rescues, and the list can go on and on.

Organizations, like those mentioned above, are what creates strength and vibrancy in our communities. And these organizations would not be possible without YOU, our West Hants volunteers. We are deeply grateful for everything you do to contribute to our wonderful community.

Throughout the month, we will announce all 2026 award recipients as we move towards our annual Volunteer Banquet on September 23rd. So join us daily as we announce each of our award recipients!

The Inspiring Business Program promotes West Hants businesses who contribute to a strong and vibrant West Hants!

This program marries the Support Local movement with businesses that also support our community. We want to celebrate businesses that invest in our community’s vibrancy through donations, fundraising, sponsorships, community drives, volunteering, and so much more!

Our next West Hants Inspiring Business is Saturno Maple Farm!

Saturno Maple Farm is a family-run business, operated completely by Robert, his wife and their son who all play a part in the experience at the farm.

Giving back to the community is an important part of what they do. Saturno Maple Farm has donated both cash and family maple farm tour passes to support their local community hall and its fundraising efforts.

The farm welcomes local families, homeschool groups, seniors, and community organizations to experience the farm and learn more about maple production and agriculture. Their tours provide an educational and immersive experience where visitors can learn about the maple-making process from start to finish and discover where the food we enjoy comes from.

Saturno Maple Farm also believes in supporting the wider West Hants community. They help promote Avondale and other nearby West Hants attractions to their visitors, encouraging people to make a day of their trip and explore and support other local businesses along the way.

They also participate in and promote local community events whenever they can, helping create connections between visitors, residents, and other businesses in the area. More than anything, Saturno Maple Farm strives to make their farm a welcoming place where both local residents and visitors can learn, explore, and connect with agriculture. They are a prime example of how businesses can choose to operate sustainably and promote climate-informed choices.

From the first drop of sap to the finished maple product, their tours offer a truly immersive experience and a chance to see how maple products are made from start to finish.

Our next West Hants Inspiring Business is The Bread Gallery!

For the last 15 years, The Bread Gallery has been more than just a place to pick up a freshly baked treat or admire beautiful artwork. They have also been a constant helping hand in their community.

Whether it’s supporting local fundraisers, Christmas Angels, the Brooklyn Early Learning and Childcare Centre, local sports teams and recreation clubs, or the Avon River Arts Society, The Bread Gallery is always looking for ways to give back and support the community around them.

What may look like a local bakery is actually so much more, and it comes with a beautiful story. The Bread Gallery came to be when owner Joan was searching for a good loaf of local bread. As luck would have it, her husband owned an empty, century-old building with no real purpose. Instead of continuing to look for somewhere to buy a loaf of bread, Joan decided to create a place of her own!

Combining her love of art with her desire for fresh-baked goods, Joan opened The Bread Gallery. What started as a search for a good loaf of bread grew into a beloved local business that brings together fresh baking, art, and community.

When we met with the store manager, she shared this wonderful story of how The Bread Gallery came to be. She also told us that Joan will often bring pieces from her personal art collection to display and sell in the shop, as her collection at home has grown over the years.

The Bread Gallery truly shows how a local business can become so much more than a place to shop. It can be a place to gather, discover local art, enjoy something delicious, and give back to the community.

What an incredible morning on the first West Hants Welcome Wheels tour!

Mayor Zebian kicked things off by welcoming everyone and then we were in the way for a fast stop to see the Tidal Bore (which we missed by a few mins 😬).

New-to-West Hants residents visited Community Champions, Dawn & Tasha, as we toured the Hants Shore & Avondale. We also stopped by The Flying Apron Inn & Cookery to meet Melissa & Chris and enjoy the most delicious mid-morning snacks!

Our next West Hants Inspiring Business is A Buyer's Choice Home Inspections Nova Scotia West, Annapolis Valley.

For over 10 years, A Buyer’s Choice Home Inspections has been proudly serving the Annapolis Valley and giving back to the communities they call home. We had the opportunity to chat with Alex, the owner, and learn more about the many ways they support West Hants.

A Buyer’s Choice is always looking for ways to get involved and lend a helping hand. From supporting local sports teams to volunteering at community events, they believe in being more than just a local business, they believe in being an active part of the community.

They have team of volunteers that have support groups and events that bring people together, including Rock the Rink and Avon River Days, as well as volunteering with the Belmont Community Breakfast.
