Today, on World Elder Abuse Awareness Day, we are reminded of our solemn responsibility to protect and support seniors ...who helped build our communities and our country.
Throughout my years as a police officer, I saw firsthand the positive impact on seniors when they were treated with respect, dignity, and gratitude. I also witnessed the devastating impact that physical/emotional abuse, neglect, isolation, and exploitation can have on older adults and their families.
Elder abuse often happens behind closed doors, making awareness and vigilance all the more important. Whether it is physical, emotional, financial, or psychological abuse, we must be prepared to recognize the signs, speak up, and offer support; because they deserve to live in safety, dignity, and respect.
Today, let us honour their contributions by standing up against elder abuse and by looking out for the seniors in our lives, our neighbourhoods, and our communities.

Respect for our seniors is more than a value...it is a measure of us and who we are as a society.
