SCO YOUTH COUNCIL IN SANDY BAY 🪶❤️

SCO Youth Chief Billy Bird and Youth Councillor Tyshaundrea Desjarlais were honoured to be in Sandy Bay First Nation for their powwow.

It was incredible to see the amount of leadership, mentorship, and community support present throughout the weekend. Gatherings like these create important opportunities for our youth to connect with leaders, learn from role models, build relationships, and feel empowered to take on leadership roles within their communities.

The Youth Council is proud to be part of creating and supporting spaces where young people can see themselves as future leaders, advocates, and change-makers.

Billy and Tyshaundrea also had the opportunity to meet Brian Shaw and Devon Larratt, making for some memorable moments and meaningful connections along the way.

SCO Youth Council at the Treaty 1–11 Gathering

SCO Youth Chief Billy Bird is attending the Treaty 1–11 Gathering to listen, learn, collect important information, and ensure that the voices and perspectives of the 33 Nations represented by the Southern Chiefs’ Organization are brought forward. As a young leader, Billy is proud to be present at the table, connecting with leadership, Elders, Knowledge Keepers, youth, and community members while learning more about the priorities, challenges, and opportunities facing our Nations.

SCO Youth Councillor and IRTC Regional Representative Avery Letandre was also able to make it out to the gathering, representing the youth of the IRTC region and contributing to the work taking place throughout the event. Avery is volunteering her time by serving and assisting leaders, Elders, and Knowledge Keepers, demonstrating the importance of youth stepping forward not only to participate, but to serve her communities and support those who carry knowledge and leadership.

Being present at gatherings like Treaty 1–11 is an important part of youth leadership. It creates opportunities to build relationships, learn from those who have carried these teachings before us, and bring that knowledge back to our young people. Our youth representatives are committed to making sure young people have a voice in important conversations and are prepared to carry these responsibilities forward.

Youth leadership is not only about having a seat at the table—it is about showing up, listening, serving, learning, and building relationships. The participation of our SCO Youth Council members reflects the strength of our young people and the important role youth have in supporting our Nations today while preparing to lead tomorrow.

The SCO Youth Council is proud to continue representing the youth of our 33 Southern Nations, building relationships across Treaty territories, and ensuring that the voices of our young people remain a meaningful part of the conversations shaping our communities and our future.

YOUTH COUNCIL SUPPORTING OUR GRAND CHIEF

SCO Youth Councillor Tyshaundrea Desjarlais of Ebb and Flow First Nation was proud to join Grand Chief Jerry Daniels in the Grand Entry at O-Chi-Chak-Ko-Sipi First Nation’s 28th Annual Pow Wow.

Having our Youth Councillor alongside our Grand Chief demonstrates the strength of youth leadership within our Nations and the importance of creating space for young people to participate, learn, and carry our culture forward.

Our youth are not just the leaders of tomorrow — they are leaders today.

🏗️ SCO Youth Council | Wehwehneh Bahgahkinahgohn 🏙️

The Southern Chiefs’ Organization (SCO) Youth Council was honoured to tour Wehwehneh Bahgahkinahgohn — “It is Visible” in downtown Winnipeg. This incredible project is transforming the former Hudson’s Bay building into a space rooted in First Nations leadership, community, culture, and opportunity. (SCOinc)

It was inspiring for our Youth Council to see firsthand the work taking place and to learn more about what the future holds for our youth, our communities, and our Nations.

Before our tour, we came together for a Youth Council meeting where we had the opportunity to team bond, strengthen our relationships, and continue important discussions about our work, our goals, and how we can continue bringing the voices of SCO youth forward.

Being able to gather as a council, connect with one another, and then experience a project like Wehwehneh Bahgahkinahgohn was a meaningful reminder that our youth have a place in shaping the future. We are proud to learn, lead, build relationships, and envision what is possible for the generations to come.

Celebrating Our Youth Councillor 🌿🦬

We are incredibly proud to celebrate our Youth Councillor, who represented Ebb and Flow First Nation from Manitoba as a delegate for Miss Indigenous Canada. ❤️

She carried our community, culture, teachings, and the voices of our youth with her on a national stage. Her dedication to sharing Indigenous teachings and uplifting our people is something we are so proud to witness.

Her presentation on her spirit name, Wabishkeh Mushkehdoh Pizikesee — Little White Buffalo, and the teachings of the buffalo as a giver beautifully reflected the importance of sharing, caring for one another, and carrying our traditions forward for the next generation.

As our Youth Councillor, she continues to inspire our youth to be proud of who they are, where they come from, and the teachings that have been passed down to us. We are so proud to have her representing our youth and our community. 🤍

June Recap 🇮🇹🏀🌎

June was a month filled with connection, culture, and youth leadership.

the lead and newly appointed First Nations Ambassador of italy + Youth Councillor Dion Traverse accompanied by Youth Chief Billy Bird, and Youth Councillor Avery Letandre had the opportunity to represent their Nations on the international stage in Salerno, Italy, taking part in an international basketball and cultural exchange.

From competing on the court to sharing our cultures and building relationships with youth from Italy, the experience was about more than basketball — it was about showing the strength, pride, and leadership our young people carry with them wherever they go.

We are grateful for the people, communities, and Nations who continue to support our youth and create opportunities for us to learn, connect, and represent home.

June was a reminder that when our youth are given the opportunity, they will carry our Nations forward. 🏀🌎

Join the 2nd Annual Walk for Missing + Murdered Indigenous Men + Boys as we come together to honour those we have lost, raise awareness, and stand beside families and survivors.

Too many of our brothers, fathers, sons, cousins, and friends are missing or have had their lives taken. Their names and stories deserve to be remembered.

🕛 12PM – 3PM
📍 Walk starts at the Canadian Museum for Human Rights
➡️ Speeches at the Legislative Building at 1:30PM

Hand drums are welcomed and encouraged. Let’s walk together in unity, healing, and support for our communities.
