Kano State Governor, Alhaji Abba Kabir Yusuf, has officially resigned his membership of the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP), citing unresolved internal crises, leadership disputes, and ongoing legal battles that have weakened the party nationwide.
In a resignation letter dated Friday, January 23, 2026, and addressed to the NNPP Chairman of Diso-Chiranchi Ward, Gwale LGA, the governor made it clear that this was not a rash move, but a carefully considered decision taken in the interest of Kano people.
Governor Yusuf expressed gratitude to the NNPP for giving him the political platform that brought him into office, acknowledging the support and goodwill he received since joining the party in 2022. However, he did not mince words about the internal turmoil rocking the party.
According to him, persistent leadership disagreements, court cases, and internal divisions have created cracks that now appear irreconcilable, leaving members disenfranchised and the party structure increasingly unstable at both state and national levels.
What makes this development even more explosive is this:
👉 The governor is not leaving alone.
He is reportedly exiting the NNPP alongside:
21 members of the Kano State House of Assembly
8 members of the House of Representatives
44 Local Government Chairmen across Kano State
That’s not just a resignation — that’s a political realignment in real time.
Governor Yusuf insists the decision was taken in good faith, without bitterness, and with a continued commitment to peace, unity, and the development of Kano State. But politically, this move raises serious questions:
Is this the final blow to NNPP’s influence in Kano?
Where does Governor Yusuf go next?
Is Kano witnessing the birth of a new political bloc?
And what does this mean for 2027?
One thing is clear: Kano politics just entered a new phase — and the ripple effects will be felt far beyond the state.
💬 What do YOU think about Governor Yusuf’s exit from NNPP?
Is this a smart move in the interest of Kano people, or a risky political gamble?
