Don’t burn garbage — it’s unsafe and not permitted.
Under Township of Stone Mills By-Law 2015-810, open-air burning is regulated to protect people, property and the environment.
Burn barrels are not for household waste. They may only be used for permitted burning of suitable clean material—not grass, dead leaves, household garbage, or any material that produces toxic or noxious fumes.
Burn barrels are also prohibited:
- In lands designated as Hamlet under the Township Official Plan;
- On properties with multiple residential dwellings or dwelling units; and
- During any Township burn ban.
Burning garbage, plastics, treated or painted wood, construction debris, and other waste can release harmful smoke and toxins, create nuisance conditions for neighbours, and lead to uncontrolled fires.
Please use local waste and recycling services for proper disposal, and check current fire conditions before burning.
