This week, the current Chair of the United Nations Board of Auditors and First President of the French Court of Auditors, Ms. Amélie de Montchalin discovered the renovation site of the Palais des Nations and met with members of the Strategic Heritage Plan (SHP) team.

The visit offered a valuable moment for dialogue with the SHP team on the project’s key challenges, its progress, and its crucial role in the sustainable modernization of UN Geneva’s infrastructure.

Cette semaine, la présidente en exercice du Comité des commissaires aux comptes des Nations Unies et Première présidente de la Cour des comptes française, Mme Amélie de Montchalin, a découvert le chantier de rénovation du Palais des Nations et a rencontré les membres de l’équipe du Plan stratégique patrimonial (PSP).

Cette visite a offert un moment précieux d’échange avec l’équipe du PSP sur les principaux défis du projet, son état d’avancement et son rôle essentiel dans la modernisation durable des infrastructures de l’ONU à Genève.

Another important milestone for the Strategic Heritage Plan (SHP) UN Geneva.

Asbestos abatement in the Building E office tower has been completed, paving the way for the start of dismantling works in the coming days.

Widely used in construction during the 20th century, asbestos must be removed under strict safety controls before any demolition can take place. Over recent months, specialist contractors have safely removed all asbestos from the tower in accordance with Swiss regulations, using sealed work areas, negative-pressure systems and continuous air monitoring.

Attention now turns to the podium, where asbestos removal continues ahead of renovation.

The successful completion of this work reflects the careful planning, rigorous safety measures and close coordination that underpin every stage of the SHP.

Nouvelle étape importante franchie pour le Plan stratégique patrimonial (PSP).

Les travaux de désamiantage dans la tour de bureaux du Bâtiment E sont désormais terminés, ouvrant la voie au démarrage des travaux de démantèlement dans les prochains jours.

Largement utilisé dans la construction au XXe siècle, l’amiante doit être retiré sous des contrôles de sécurité stricts avant toute démolition. Au cours des derniers mois, des entreprises spécialisées ont procédé au retrait sécurisé de l’ensemble de l’amiante de la tour, conformément aux réglementations suisses, en utilisant des zones de travail confinées, des systèmes de mise en dépression et un contrôle continu de la qualité de l’air.

L’attention se porte désormais sur le podium, où les opérations de désamiantage se poursuivent en préparation des travaux de rénovation.

L’achèvement réussi de ces travaux reflète la planification rigoureuse, les mesures de sécurité strictes et la coordination étroite qui sous-tendent chaque étape du PSP.

Last week, the SHP team had the honour of welcoming Her Royal Highness The Duchess of Edinburgh for a visit to the Human Rights and Alliance of Civilizations Room, also known as Room XX UN Geneva. The visit took place in the context of her meeting with the new Deputy High Commissioner for Human Rights, Ms. Awa Dabo to discuss her work on human rights and the work of the Human Rights Council.

During the tour, Neil Bradley, SHP Chief of Design and Construction presented the room’s exceptional ceiling sculpture, created the prominent contemporary Spanish artist Miquel Barceló - the largest artwork ever gifted to the United Nations Office at Geneva. He then accompanied Her Royal Highness and the Deputy High-Commissioner to Building A where they viewed the newly renovated Assembly Hall, followed by a view across International Geneva, including the Palais des Nations gardens and artworks, the Geneva Lake and French Alps from the Delegates’ Restaurant terrace.

La semaine dernière, l’équipe du PSP a eu l’honneur d’accueillir Son Altesse Royale la Duchesse d’Édimbourg pour une visite de la Salle des droits de l’homme et de l’Alliance des civilisations, également connue sous le nom de Salle XX. Cette visite s’inscrivait dans le cadre de sa rencontre avec la nouvelle Haut-Commissaire adjointe aux droits de l’homme, Mme Awa Dabo, afin de discuter de son action en faveur des droits de l’homme et des travaux du Conseil des droits de l’homme.

Au cours de la visite, Neil Bradley, Chef de la conception et de la construction pour le PSP, a présenté l’exceptionnelle sculpture du plafond de la salle, œuvre de l’éminent artiste contemporain espagnol Miquel Barceló. Il s’agit de la plus grande œuvre d’art jamais offerte à l’Office des Nations Unies à Genève. Il a ensuite accompagné Son Altesse Royale et la Haut-Commissaire adjointe jusqu’au Bâtiment A, où elles ont pu découvrir la Salle des assemblées récemment rénovée, avant de profiter d’une vue imprenable sur la Genève internationale, notamment les jardins et les œuvres d’art du Palais des Nations, le lac Léman et les Alpes françaises depuis la terrasse du restaurant des délégués.

Recently, the Strategic Heritage Plan (SHP) team was pleased to welcome Mr. Andreas Stucki and Ms. Sarah Chokri from the Foundation for Buildings for International Organizations (FIPOI) for a tour of the Palais des Nations UN Geneva, which is currently undergoing renovation.

Our guests were able to see the progress of the work firsthand and explore parts of the Palais they had never visited before.

Récemment, l'équipe du Plan stratégique patrimonial (PSP) a eu le plaisir d'accueillir M. Andreas Stucki et Mme Sarah Chokri de la Fondation des Immeubles Pour les Organisations Internationales (FIPOI) dans le cadre d’une visite du Palais des Nations, actuellement en rénovation.

Nos invités ont pu constater de leurs propres yeux l'avancement des travaux et découvrir des parties du Palais qu'ils n'avaient jamais visitées auparavant.

The remains of the United Nations flag pictured below were retrieved from outside of the Organization’s building in Algiers following the bombing that killed 17 United Nations staff on 11 December 2007.

It has been temporarily relocated in the Salle des Pas Perdus UN Geneva during the renovation works of Building E as part of the SHP project.

Two roll-up banners represent the medallions honoring the 17 United Nations staff killed in the Algiers bombing and the 22 victims of the Canal Hotel bombing in Baghdad on 19 August 2003. For technical reasons, it was decided to keep the two medallions protected in place in Building E during the renovation works.

The remains of this flag will return to its original location in Building E alongside the medallions at the completion of the SHP project works.

Les vestiges du drapeau des Nations Unies qui figurent sur la photo ci-dessous ont été retrouvés à l’extérieur des bureaux de l’Organisation à Alger à la suite de l’attentat qui a coûté la vie à 17 membres du personnel des Nations Unies le 11 décembre 2007.

Ils ont été temporairement transférés dans la Salle des Pas Perdus pendant les travaux de rénovation du bâtiment E réalisés dans le cadre du projet du PSP.

Deux bannières représentent les médaillons honorant les 17 victimes de l’attentat d’Alger et les 22 victimes de l’attentat contre l’hôtel Canal à Bagdad le 19 août 2003. Pour des raisons techniques, il a été décidé de protéger et laisser les médaillons en place dans le bâtiment E pendant les travaux de rénovation.

Les vestiges de ce drapeau retrouveront leur emplacement d'origine dans le bâtiment E, aux côtés des médaillons, une fois les travaux du projet du PSP achevés.

The former League of Nations Council Cinema Room (known as Room C6) in Building C of the Palais des Nations UN Geneva is currently undergoing a full refurbishment, thanks to a generous donation from the People’s Republic of China.

In just a few months, it will reopen as a modern multipurpose meeting room featuring 18 unique artworks created by Chinese artists.

These pieces are now packed and on their journey from Guangzhou to Geneva, we are looking forward to unpacking and installing them soon.

L'ancienne salle de cinéma du Conseil de la Société des Nations (connue sous le nom de Salle C6), située dans le Bâtiment C du Palais des Nations, fait actuellement l'objet d'une rénovation complète, grâce à un don généreux de la République populaire de Chine.

Dans quelques mois seulement, elle rouvrira ses portes en tant que salle de réunion polyvalente moderne, ornée de 18 œuvres d'art uniques créées par des artistes chinois.

Ces œuvres sont actuellement emballées et en route de Guangzhou vers Genève. Nous avons hâte de les déballer et de les installer prochainement.

A new exhibition at the Palais des Nations UN Geneva showcases Building H, delivered as part of the Strategic Heritage Plan (SHP).

Building H provides modern, flexible workspace for around 1,700 staff, supporting the work of the United Nations in Geneva across humanitarian, human rights and administrative functions.

The exhibition is on display in the Grab & Go area in Building H and is also available online for those not based at the Palais:

Une nouvelle exposition au Palais des Nations à l’ONU Genève met en valeur le bâtiment H, réalisé dans le cadre du Plan stratégique patrimonial (PSP).

Le bâtiment H offre des espaces de travail modernes et flexibles pour environ 1 700 membres du personnel, soutenant les activités des Nations Unies à Genève dans les domaines de l’action humanitaire, des droits de l’homme et des fonctions administratives.

L’exposition est présentée dans l’espace Grab & Go du bâtiment H et est également disponible en ligne pour les personnes qui ne sont pas basées au Palais :

🚶‍♂️ New pedestrian route at the Palais des Nations 🚧

Visitors and colleagues at the Palais des Nations in UN Geneva may notice new yellow markings and temporary barriers guiding pedestrians through one of the main parking areas on site. As renovation works on Building E continue, the previous walkway near the building is now within the construction site and no longer accessible.

To keep everyone safe, a new clearly marked pedestrian route has been introduced through the parking area, with yellow lines, arrows and temporary barriers guiding the way.

👉 If you are passing through, please follow the marked path. It may take a little longer, but helps ensure safe movement during the works.

🚲 Cyclists are asked to dismount before entering the plaza in front of Building H.

Thank you for your cooperation during this important phase of modernization.

🚶‍♂️ Nouvelle voie piétonne au Palais des Nations 🚧

Dans le cadre de la rénovation du bâtiment E, l’ancien passage à proximité du bâtiment est désormais fermé.

Pour garantir la sécurité de toutes et tous, une nouvelle voie piétonne balisée a été mise en place à travers le parking, avec des lignes jaunes, des flèches et des barrières temporaires.

👉 Merci de suivre la voie indiquée. Il peut rallonger légèrement votre trajet, mais permet de circuler en toute sécurité pendant les travaux.

🚲 Les cyclistes sont priés de mettre pied à terre avant d’accéder à l’esplanade devant le bâtiment H.
