'Te Reo'
People were asking me Papa Tiare how come you are fluent in speaking four different Cook Island maori dialect, reo Mangaia, reo Rarotonga, reo Pukapuka e te reo Mangarongaro.
Well let me explain it in these ways.
1. Reo Mangaia
Naturally born and raise in Mangaia for 19 years and my Mangaia reo came along since birth and I will always cherished it in my heart for ever.
2. Reo Rarotonga
I came to Rarotonga since 1982 and has lived here for over 40 years.
My work as a Public Health officer do require public awareness campaign, advertising or publicity were the Rarotongan dialect is the normal conversation both spoken and written were most of our people will understand the health messages relayed or received in the Rarotongan dialect which I have the opportunity to master it and speaking it daily at work or in the community
3. Reo Pukapuka.
After graduation from Fiji Shcool of Medicine from 1986 to 1987 I was transfered to work in Pukapuka for 3 years from 1988 to 1990.
While in Pukapuka one has to learn the local Pukapukan reo which I have learnt and spoke the Pukapukan reo fluently.
The first 3 months were hard but at the end of the day it is worthwhile learning and speaking the reo Pukapuka
4. Reo Mangarongaro.
Well the Mangarongaro dialect was learn through my younger age when I met a Mangarongaro girl.
We have been living together for about 3 years from 1983 to 1986 before I left for Fiji where our relationship ended but I have learnt a lot of the Penrhyn dialect through her plus still speaking the reo at work because I have 2 fellow Penrhyn colleuges at work to keep the reo going day in and day out.
So these were the opportunities of speaking these different kind of Cook Island reo through our own instinct and personal commitment in keeping our reo alive.
