BGI-Research, Zhejiang Lab and collaborators have introduced ATLAS, a genomic AI framework designed to support disease gene and locus discovery from genome sequences.

The study, accepted by ACM SIGKDD Conference on Knowledge Discovery and Data Mining, demonstrates how genomic foundation models may help researchers identify disease-associated signals, particularly in small-cohort studies, rare-disease research and low-frequency variant analysis.

Using β-thalassemia as a validation case, ATLAS successfully prioritized HBB, the major gene known to cause the disease, and helped narrow candidate regions for further study.

This work reflects BGI’s continued efforts to make genomic AI more practical for precision medicine and biomedical research.

🌟 Open Call for School Partners | 2026 BGI Science Popularization Carnival - Hong Kong & Macao

Science should never remain confined to textbooks.

Initiated by Dr. Yang Huanming, Co-founder of BGI, Academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, and Chairman of BGI Research, and Dr. Yin Ye, CEO of BGI Group, the BGI Science Popularization Carnival is a public science outreach program that brings cutting-edge life sciences into schools and inspires students to explore the beauty of life sciences.

Since 2018, the program has delivered over 320 public science popularization lectures and activities, reaching more than 2.61 million teachers, students, and families.

In 2026, we are inviting primary and secondary schools in Hong Kong and Macao to join us through two new school-based life science sessions:

🧬 Discovering the Beauty of Life at the Extremes
Recommended for: Primary and junior secondary students
From Mount Everest to Mariana Trench, students will explore how life survives in extreme environments and discover the wonder of biodiversity.

💡 Smart Health: Protecting the Beauty of Life
Recommended for: Junior secondary and senior secondary students
Starting from exercise, sleep, genes, and health data, students will explore individual differences and the future of smart health shaped by genomics and AI.

A new study from BGI researchers and collaborators, published in Cell Reports, uses CycloneSEQ long-read sequencing to explore how gut bacteria interact at complete-genome resolution.

The team analyzed 1,150 gut bacterial strains and grouped them into four predicted ecological roles based on how they compete for nutrients and support one another metabolically. Looking at gut communities by these roles helped reveal links to inflammatory bowel disease activity that broader community-level measures may overlook.

This work underscores BGI’s efforts to advance microbiome research through complete genome sequencing, metabolic modeling, and strain-level analysis.

A new study in Science led by BGI-Research and collaborators provides fresh insight into how s*x chromosomes evolve.

Using chromosome-level genome assemblies from 19 gecko species, the team found that gecko s*x chromosomes have emerged many times independently across evolution. The study suggests these changes are not purely random: environmental pressures such as paleoclimate, together with the gene content of ancestral chromosomes, may help shape the direction of s*x chromosome evolution.

This work highlights BGI’s continued contribution to large-scale comparative genomics and to understanding the genetic mechanisms behind biodiversity.

Under the theme “Bio-Generative Intelligence for Health,” ICG-21 will bring together experts and guests from genomics, medicine, artificial intelligence, education, industry, and science communication to discuss new directions for human health.

The 2026 Thailand Clinical Genomics & Precision Medicine Forum, co-hosted by BGI Group and Bangkok Genomics Innovation Co., Ltd. (BKGI), recently concluded successfully in Bangkok.

The event gathered more than 100 clinicians, researchers, public health representatives and industry partners from across Thailand to exchange insights on the clinical application of genomics and multi-omics technologies.

Discussions covered reproductive health, thalassemia screening, rare disease diagnosis, oncology precision medicine, pathogen detection, preventive health and technology platforms supporting clinical translation.

BGI Group was pleased to support this forum as a platform for dialogue between medical, research, public health and industry communities, contributing to shared understanding and practical experience for advancing precision medicine in Thailand.

Students from around the world came together at the 2026 DUT-BGI International Summer School for an unforgettable learning experience.

They explored advanced sequencing labs, smart health accessment, omics technologies, agriculture research, and the BGI Future Intelligent Health Center - while learning directly from professors and professionals in the field.

What happens in the brain as it ages?

A new Cell study from BGI-Research, Jilin University, and Jinan University takes a close look at this question in macaques, mapping changes across the brain one cell at a time.

By studying nearly 3 million cell nuclei from eight brain regions, the researchers found that some of the strongest age-related changes were in the pons and medulla, a part of the brainstem rich in white matter, the wiring that helps carry signals through the nervous system.

The study also suggests that brain aging is not always a simple, steady decline. Some big changes appeared by middle age, while the oldest macaques showed activity in pathways that may help cells maintain and repair themselves.

The publicly available atlas can help researchers explore how primate brains age and how this may relate to human brain health.
