Today on September 4th we celebrate Finnish Food Day! In honor of the festive day, our Embassy chef Nicholas shows how to bake a true Finnish staple: the Karelian pie (karjalanpiirakka)!🇫🇮🥧

The Karelian pie is a beloved salty pastry originating from the historical Karelia region. The delicious pastries traditionally feature a thin, crispy rye crust and and a salty rice or barley porridge filling. The pies are best served warm with egg butter (munavoi) on top!🧈🥚

Karelian pies are very popular and one of the best known Finnish foods. They are a definite must-try for anyone visiting Finland!✨

Every year on the last Saturday of August, we celebrate Finnish Nature Day!🇫🇮🌲The day shows appreciation towards Finland's forests, lakes and wildlife that shape the every day life of Finns. Finland is the first country in the world to have such a dedicated festive day for nature!✨

The easiest way to celebrate Finnish Nature Day is to spend some time outdoors, breathe the clean air and appreciate the surroundings. The festive day highlights the joy of Finland's beautiful natural settings and their contribution to the wellbeing of citizens.🚶‍➡️🌾🍂

To mark the occasion, we gathered our Embassy staff's favorite pictures of Finland's charming, colorful and peaceful nature. Enjoy!🩵

A well-known fact: Finnish people love their saunas!🌡️🌿🪵 Perhaps less well known is why exactly sauna is such an important part of Finnish culture and identity.

Sauna is a centuries-old tradition in Finland, a sacred place for physical and spiritual cleansing, social bonding and embracing a sense of inner peace. Throughout its history, Finnish sauna has served many different practical purposes, for example offering a sterile place for childbirth and a location for healing rituals!🧖🧼

Nowadays, there are more than 3 million saunas in the country and most Finns have easy access to one, whether in their own home, at their summer cottage or at a public sauna. In 2020, Finnish sauna culture was recognized by UNESCO as an integral part of Finland's cultural heritage.✨

This summer our Embassy took on an earnest task: to find out whether Cypriot ice cream is as delicious as Finnish!🍦🇫🇮🇨🇾

Did you know that Finland is among the countries that consume the most ice cream in the world per capita? During the springs and summers, the streets in Finnish cities are filled with ice cream stands. You can also find a large variety of ice cream in every grocery store all year long, even during the winter!☀️❄️

After much consideration and empirical research, we can say that Cypriot ice cream is tasty, flavorful and refreshing in the island's blazing heat. Almost as delicious as Finnish "jäätelö"!🍨

At the same time we want to say our heartfelt thank you and farewell to Sanna who has supported the staff at the Embassy during the summer holiday season. She has been an integral part of the team and assisted with consular services, administrative tasks as well as diplomatic duties - and of course with ice cream tasting. Thank you, Sanna, and welcome back to Cyprus!✨
