On 18 August, the Embassy of the Republic of Malawi in Berlin was pleased to receive Ms Martina Böckmann, the new Desk Officer for Malawi at the German Federal Foreign Office.

The visit provided a valuable opportunity to reaffirm the importance Malawi attaches to its longstanding and cordial relations with the Federal Republic of Germany, and to exchange views on the continued advancement of bilateral cooperation.

The Embassy looks forward to developing a close, constructive and mutually trusting working relationship with Ms Böckmann and the German Federal Foreign Office. Through sustained dialogue and cooperation, the Embassy remains committed to further deepening the partnership between Malawi and Germany and advancing areas of shared interest for the mutual benefit of both countries.

On 27 July 2026, H.E Joseph John Mpinganjira, Ambassador of the Republic of Malawi to Germany officially inaugurated Mr Daniel Imhäuser as the Honorary Consul of the Republic of Malawi in the state of Hesse in Germany. The ceremony was held in the city of Offenbach and was attended by distinguished guests from government, business, academia, and civil society, including Dr. Felix Schwenke, the Lord Mayor of Offenbach am Main , who underscored the importance of local and international partnerships.

The Lord Mayor highlighted Offenbach’s identity as an international, innovative, and globally connected city, expressing confidence that the establishment of the Honorary Consul office would further strengthen cooperation between Offenbach and Malawi while fostering new opportunities for economic, cultural, and educational exchange.

Ambassador Mpinganjira emphasized a shared vision of moving beyond traditional development assistance towards partnerships based on trade, investment, innovation, and mutual respect, reaffirming Malawi’s commitment to building lasting relationships with the Federal Republic of Germany.

In his inaugural address, Mr. Daniel Imhäuser spoke of the importance of trust, personal relationships, and practical cooperation in diplomacy. The Honorary consul reaffirmed his commitment to serving Malawian citizens in the region while promoting stronger bilateral ties through initiatives in trade, vocational education, logistics, the circular economy, and the Millennium Coffee project.

The inauguration marks an important milestone in the enduring friendship between the Republic of Malawi and the Federal Republic of Germany and opens a new chapter of cooperation for the mutual benefit of both nations.

On Saturday, 4th July, 2026, Malawians living in Germany celebrated Malawi’s 62nd Independence which falls on 6th July, annually. Organized by “Umodzi wa Amalawi”, the event which took place in Frankfurt, brought together the Malawi diaspora community from across Germany and it was graced by the Deputy Ambassador. Honourable Thokozani Tembo, Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Water Development attending the 18th Global forum for Food and Agriculture (GFFA) in Berlin, Germany from 14th to 17th January 2026, under the theme “Water.Harvest.Our Future.”

The GFFA 2026 concluded with the Agriculture Ministerial Conference where a declaration was signed by over 60 Ministers of Agriculture addressing sustainable water management, global water resilience, blue economy, water and food security.

The Ambassador was invited to give a public lecture at the University of Jena. In the picture (front L to R) Prof. Dr. Freitag, Ambassador Mpinganjira, Prof. Dr. Marx and Dr. Hillinger. At the invitation of the Chair of Policy at the University of Jena, Professor Dr. Andreas Freytag, the Ambassador gave a public lecture to the students of the Faculty of Economics and Business Administration and some invited guests titled: “German-African Economic Relations – A Southern Africa Perspective”
University of Jena is a dynamic and innovative institution with a wide range of subjects shaping the future through excellent research and teaching. The university offers Bachelor’s, Master’s and Doctoral degrees in different fields (see: www.uni-jena.de). The study program “Master’s of Science in Economics” is offered in English with a duration of 4 semesters.
During the visit, the Ambassador paid a courtesy call to the office of the President of the University where he had discussions with Prof. Dr. Andreas Marx, the President of the University and Dr. Claudia Hillinger, the Head of the International Office. The meeting centred on possibilities of partnerships of University of Jena with some selected Universities in Malawi as well as Professors’ and students’ exchange programs.

A team from the University of Lübeck visited the Embassy for a follow-up meeting after a visit to Malawi. The University of Lübeck is in collaboration with the Kamuzu University of Health Sciences (KUHeS) in establishing academic and research partnerships. Prof. Thomas Münte, the Vice President of Medicine at Lübeck University had a virtual exchange with the Vice Chancellor of KUHeS, Prof. MacPherson Mallewa during the meeting.
