Happy Birthday, Digital Tachograph!

In May 2006, the digital tachograph became mandatory across Europe — that was 20 years ago. And since then, it’s been a true success story.

What began back then with phasing out the analog diagram chart has evolved into an intelligent system that has fundamentally transformed freight transport in Europe:

• Greater safety thanks to precise recording of driving and rest times

• Fairer working conditions and competition

• From a control device to a connected data hub for efficient fleet management

At VDO, we’ve been developing tachographs for more than 100 years — from the first mechanical device to today’s DTCO 4.1b with Galileo authentication. And we couldn’t be prouder of the journey we’ve taken together.

🎬🚚 Visiting the Maintrans transport company

We recently visited Maintrans and spent some time with Nico Troiano, Head of Operations, who shared how important reliable real time data has become in everyday fleet operations.
With a mix of own vehicles and a high share of subcontracted transports, dispatching often means lots of coordination and limited visibility.
This is where the VDO Link comes into play. Nico showed us how they use the device flexibly from vehicle to vehicle: plug it in, connect and access the data.
“We now have real time data available and we can simply move the device from one vehicle to the next.”
For Maintrans, this means greater transparency in dispatching and a digital transport process that easily includes subcontractors, without additional installations and without major investments.
